Gambling – an ancient avocation

Many of the casino games enjoyed world-wide today have their origins in the far east, and this part of the world is also home to some of the oldest surviving evidence of human gambling. Keno, mahjong and sic bo are just three examples of games with an oriental origin. Strategic guides on all these casino games can be found at casinogamesreview.com.

The oldest known keno slips date back to the Hand dynasty (205-187 B.C.) and keno is believed to have helped pay for part of the Chinese Wall. The tradition of using lotteries and other types of gambling to gather funds for worthy causes is still alive and well in our time, and many countries have their own state lotteries to help fund public expenditure. There are also plenty of charitable organizations that relay on gamblers to fund their projects. Lately, online gambling sites – such as sports betting sites and online casinos – have aligned themselves with this ancient tradition by sponsoring athletes, the arts, environmental work, etcetera.

Skill or luck?

Some games are based purely on luck, while others combine luck and skill. In the first group, we find games such as roulette, punto banco, slots, scratch cards and keno, while the other group contains games such as poker, video poker, blackjack and baccarat chemin the fer.

When the outcome of a game is based solely on chance, the gambler is not allowed to make any choices that will outcome the result of the game. A roulette player is not allowed to make any choices regarding the spin of the ball and a scratch card player relies on luck, not skill, when he picks his ticket. A blackjack player will on the other hand be permitted to make choices that can make or break her hand, and a poker player can use his skills to determine things such as which cards to discard and how much to wager on a follow-up bet. Casinoer has done a great job of explaining the rules for different casino games.

In some jurisdictions, the law distinguishes between games of luck and games of skill, especially for games where skill plays a significant role.

A number of moralists condemn lotteries and refuse to see anything noble in the passion of the ordinary gambler.  They judge gambling as some atheists judge religion, by its excesses.

Gambling online

The advent of the internet has made gambling more accessible than ever before. There is no longer any need to leave your home to visit a casino or place a wager on a horse race. Offline casinos and other gambling establishments still exist throughout the world, but they need to compete with the gambling sites online for the player’s attention.

One advantage with online gambling is that it can be done with a smaller bankroll. In an offline casino, it is usual to find a roulette table where the minimum bet is less than 5 USD. Online, there are numerous casinos where roulette can be plaid for nickle and dimes. That way, gambling can be enjoyed as a low-cost hobby that does not require any major financial risk. This is true for all kinds of games online, from no limit texas hold’em poker to craps, baccarat and sports betting.
