52 Greatest Moments in the World Series of Poker

52 Greatest Moments in the World Series of PokerWith the imminent qualifiers for the 41st World Series of Poker starting to be introduced on many online poker sites, it is a good time to look back at one of the best books relating to this famous competition. “52 Greatest Moments in the World Series of Poker” chronicles some of the great games seen at the WSOP between 1970 and 2006 (the book was published in 2007).

At $39.95 (available from Amazon) the book is no lightweight price, but then again it is no lightweight book.

The book is crafted with intelligent stories of great games and great characters, past and present, and a “Featured Moment” scenario is presented in a format first explaining the “Setup” – where the circumstances preceding the hand are explained – and then the “Moment” when the hand is played out and commented on.

The 160 pages contain quotes from the players involved in the “Moment”, photos and illustrations from past WSOP and a picture gallery of past champions. It is not a book that will enhance your poker skills, but is a wondrous read or marvelous gift for a fan interested in the history of poker – thoroughly recommended.

If you enjoy the history of WSOP and great poker moments, you should enjoy watching a rerun of “2003 World Series of Poker” (DVD available on Amazon from $5.50). This was the year that Chris Moneymaker won the $10.000 Main Event and over $2.5 million in prize money, having qualified for the final via a $39 satellite on Pokerstars.com.

The drama of the competition unfolds in a double DVD set covering all 7 episodes of the ESPN television presentation, with additional special features and an interview with the winner. This tournament started the current craze for online poker because of the romance and drama surrounding the victor, and is a “must have” for any aficionado of poker history.

Satellites for the 2010 WSOP have already started on Full Tilt Poker and Titan Poker.

Basic Strategy for Rush Poker
Full Tilt Poker’s recently launched game known as “Rush Poker”, was hailed as “the greatest innovation since poker started on the Internet”. Now that the dust has settled on the game’s grand release and they hype has all but disappeared, how do we actually go about playing it effectively?

Moving from Hold'em to Omaha
If you’re bored of playing Texas Hold’em poker and are looking to try learning a different form of the game, Omaha might be an interesting place to start. Many players that are looking to broaden their poker horizons start out with Omaha as their first alternative to Hold’em, due to the similarity in structure, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the game requires similar tactics.

Big Stack Strategy
Playing the big stack in a poker tournament can be great fun, but it is important not to get carried away and to avoid the common pitfalls associated with a chip lead.

Playing Multi-Table Poker
There are many advantages to being able to play multiple tables at the same time – not least the option of winning more money – but in order to do it successfully, you need to be conscious of the best types of games to play and where to play them.

Poker Strategy: What Makes A Great Poker Player?
Anybody can learn to play poker – that’s one of the most appealing aspects of the game – but to truly master the game can take a lifetime. There are many different approaches to poker; different styles, tactics and ways to win. However, all of the best poker players share a few common traits.

How To Play The Hand - NL Hold'em and Low Pocket Pair
You’re playing a $0.5 / $1 No Limit Hold’em ring game at your regular pokerroom and there are seven opponents. The standard of play is nothing out of the ordinary; not too aggressive, not too tight and there is one other player at the table who you feel is as good as yourself, seated in the small blind. You are dealt two 8c – 8s on the button.

Playing the Bubble
The Bubble – a finishing position in a poker tournament which is just outside the money. If a tournament pays prizes to the top ten finishers and someone busts in 11th place, they have burst “on the bubble”.
