Event number four of the 2010 Aussie Millions poker series, a $1,000 + $100 Pot Limit Omaha tournament, has been won by Annette Obrestad. The twenty-one year old Norwegian battled back from near elimination to land the title and in doing so, became the first ever female Aussie Millions champion.
160 players took to the felt for the two day event and early on, Obrestad lost a sizeable pot with two pair to a flush, leaving her short stacked with around 1,000 in chips and her tournament life in serious danger. She quickly managed to improve this to around 8,000 and then to 22,000, making a straight against trip jacks.
With serious momentum on her side, she took full advantage and steamrollered through to the final table, where she sat third in chips. Obrestad then proceeded to eliminate five of her eight opponents, including the likes of Tony Bloom and Emad Tahtouh, eventually beating Billy Seri heads-up in just three hands to land the $40,000 first prize and her first major Omaha title.
This is another feather in the cap of an extraordinary young poker player, already in possession of a terrific record in multi-table tournaments and one who is fast becoming a poker icon.
Obrestad first got into poker aged just 15, hence her online screen name “Annette_15”. She claims to have never made a cash deposit into a poker site, instead building her bankroll online through freeroll tournaments and she quickly became the number one ranked player at Pocketfives.com. She won the PokerStars Sunday Hundred Grand, an $11 tournament with a massive 20,000 participants and she famously won a $4 sit and go with 180 players, looking at her cards just once, when faced with an all-in decision. That win was a real lesson in taking advantage of position and exposing opponents weaknesses.
The Betfair Poker Pro from Sandnes, in Norway became the youngest person to win a World Series of Poker Europe bracelet, in scooping the 2007 £10,000 No Limit Hold’em event, aged just 18. The first prize payout of £1,000,000 is the single largest tournament payout to a woman. Her total tournament earnings are already a little short of $3,000,000 (US).
Now that she is old enough to play in Vegas, it is surely just a matter of time before we see her landing World Series titles and breaking more records. At such a young age, she’s going to be a player to fear for a long time to come.
