If you are looking to beat Omaha Eight or Better (also known as Omaha High-Low Split) at low stakes, there are several important points to consider.
First of all, it is crucial to remember the rules of the game you are playing. That may sound obvious, but you will be surprised at just how common a mistake it is, even as you move up the limits. For poker players more used to playing Texas Hold’em, it is easy to lose a little concentration and think that the three diamonds in your hand combine with the two on the board to make a flush, but you are only allowed to use two hole cards.
Similarly, it is very easy to accidentally sit at an Omaha table instead of an Eight or Better table or having sat at the right table, to forget that there is a low pot to play for too. It is crucial to stay focussed at all times when playing any form of poker, but this is particularly true of Omaha High-Low Split.
The second key point to consider in trying to beat low stakes Omaha Eight or Better, is that non-nut hands win far less often than in a poker game like No Limit Hold’em. As there are so many different card combinations out there, the chances of running into the nuts are greatly increased and there are so many weak and inexperienced Omaha players at the lower stakes tables, that even the most unexpected of starting hands are shown down. Try not to go overboard with non-nut hands.
Thirdly, try to aim to scoop the pot, that is to win the entire pot rather than just one half. If your starting hand contains A-2, that is a bonus, but should the board fail to show three low cards, then only a high Omaha hand can win, so you may find yourself drawing dead.
High only hands are okay, as there is a chance there will be no low, so don’t write off a Q-Q-J-T type holding entirely, but the best starting hands have the potential to win both pots, hence the reason that A-A-2-3 (double suited) is statistically the best starting hand in Omaha Eight or Better.
Finally, don’t be afraid to limp at the as Omaha High-Low tables. Many poker players who come to the game from a Hold’em background are reluctant to flat call pre-flop, as they feel it is a weak play, but in Omaha High-Low, there are so many more possibilities and you can never feel entirely sure of winning the pot until all five community cards are visible. For that reason, it is okay to try and get in cheaply and once you have improved, then you can bet and raise a little harder.
Best of luck at the tables.
