Basic Strategy for Rush Poker

Full Tilt Poker’s recently launched game known as “Rush Poker”, was hailed as “the greatest innovation since poker started on the Internet”. Now that the dust has settled on the game’s grand release and they hype has all but disappeared, how do we actually go about playing it effectively?

It seems that basic ABC strategy is essentially the way to go with Rush Poker, due to the frenetic nature of the game. Your average poker game affords you the opportunity of getting to know your opponents, searching for tells and analysing betting patterns, something that is impossible when constantly being moved from table to table. Without that knowledge, it is much harder to make a play against an opponent.

There is a strong argument for tightening your game up even more when playing Rush Poker, as opposed to regular poker. Usually when playing against fish, you’ll note that they get bored and play trashy cards, hanging on to their hands for far too long. But with the opportunity to “Quick Fold” and be moved to another table when it isn’t even your turn to act, there’s no time for fish to get bored. Action junkies can throw their trash hands into the muck instantly, knowing that those premium hands will come round a lot quicker.

With that in mind, when a player raises in early or middle position you will probably need a stronger hand than in a normal game, in order to get involved. Why would they be making a move with poor cards in this spot, when they could have insta-mucked and moved on? It makes sense to give opponents more credit than in a regular poker game.

At the other extreme though, when your ABC game requires aggression, you can be even more aggressive than usual. We all know that a steal is more likely to be successful from the button or cutoff positions, but this is even more true of Rush Poker. You can raise with a wider range, knowing that players are far less likely to bother defending with average hands, when they can just move on to the next virtual poker table.

Continuation bets can be made smaller than in your normal game, because a player holding nothing will be straight off, handing you the pot. A player with a strong hand will obviously stick around, as will a top pair or second pair type of hand. There’s little point in trying to push someone out of a pot with a big post-flop bet. Value bets are hugely important.

Rush Poker is still very new and the game will certainly evolve. Watch this space for future strategy suggestions and more in-depth analysis as tactics develop.

The second part of “Poker Patter”, a look at the colourful vocabulary of the poker table, covers some of the obscure and humorous nicknames assigned to Texas Hold’em hands. If you ever found yourself wondering why your opponent was talking about his “Flat Tyre” in the middle of a hand, you might not have realised he wasn’t referring to his car. Perhaps you were confused as to why the rest of the table suddenly started talking about tennis, after a player showed her AK? Opening Hand Selection - Hold It or Fold It
Probably, the most influential decision you will ever make in a game of poker is whether to play or fold your pocket cards. Although there is a saying that “You have to be in it to win it”, knowing when to play the hand you are dealt, and when to fold, is vitally important.
