The PartyPoker Big Game IV kicked off on Sunday without “Isildur1”, but there were still plenty of well known poker faces in attendance at London’s Les Ambassadeurs club for the 48 hour cash game, which ended with David Viffer as the big winner.
Viffer, who was present at the Big Game IV table for the full 48 hours, played some incredibly aggressive poker, creating a loose image which he later exploited to the full, cashing out with an enormous £147,275 profit. Along with Viffer, Neil Channing was the only other ever-present player, though an honourable mention must go to Jesse May, who commentated for almost all of the session!
The “Big Brother” style evictions brought an interesting twist to the game and one player was granted immunity from elimination with each round of voting – the person playing the most aggressive poker, according to Matchroom Poker’s statistics. Thanks to his relentless raising and re-raising, Viffer held that title all bar once.
Arguably the most exciting hand of the PartyPoker Big Game IV came on day two and was between Viffer and Phil Laak. The latter had raised pre-flop with a suited 87 and found himself looking at a re-raise by Viffer, holding pocket aces. Laak made the call and paired the T28 flop (two clubs), before calling Viffer’s £1,000 bet. The turn brought another 8 and Viffer made it £5,000 to go, with Laak just calling. The 7 on the river didn’t concern Viffer, who fired out £9,000. Laak, in possession of a full house, made a huge raise – almost £40,000 more – to much excitement in the commentary box. After plenty of foul-mouthed consideration, Viffer made a very tough laydown, showing good discipline and proving there is more to his poker game than his fast and loose table image would have us believe.
Towards the end of Big Game IV, the atmosphere grew a little tense, with players wanting to raise the stakes and straddle more than the rules permitted and by the time the last orbit came around, the majority of players had clearly lost interest and looked ready for bed. And after 48 hours of poker, who could blame them?
Although no dates have been finalised for the television airing of PartyPoker Big Game IV, it is sure to make for excellent viewing. Plenty of poker action, lots of trash talk and Jesse May’s inimitable analysis, ably assisted in the commentary box by many of the Big Game players themselves, all adds up to a must see poker show.
