David Williams, who quit his position as a Team Bodog professional back in May, has been signed up by PokerStars.
Speculation surrounded the decision made by Williams to quit Bodog, with the most likely conclusion being his dissatisfaction with the company’s bonus payments, should Williams win a major poker tournament. His departure came shortly after his win in the World Poker Tour Championship Event held at the Bellagio, back in April, which seems to have fuelled the rumour.
But Williams has put all that behind him with this latest poker sponsorship deal. His agency, Poker Royalty, confirmed that a contract had been inked with the world’s biggest poker room in the last few days. The latest PokerStars acquisition, who owns a WSOP bracelet in addition to his WPT Championship title, has won almost $8 million in poker tournament earnings and first rose to prominence in 2004, with his World Series of Poker Main Event second place finish.
Williams will be in good company as a PokerStars professional, joining such poker legends as Chris Moneymaker, Daniel Negreanu and Barry Greenstein, names that all help the site maintain their impressive 25,000 real money ring game player average, as well as increasing traffic through the poker room by 14%, year on year.
In other PokerStars news, the Sunday Million returned this weekend, after a week’s absence. The weekend before, PokerStars had opted to run a series of World Series of Poker qualifying satellites, but the Sunday Million is back once more, much to the delight of “LOL_FAILURE”, who landed a $228,150 payout after beating “thedylan1” to the top spot.
The event had attracted 6,640 players and failed to surpass the guaranteed prize fund, ensuring plenty for online poker players this weekend, particularly as the Full Tilt Poker $750,000 Guarantee also failed to hit their target. “zombiebird” won that particular tournament, earning $132,787.50 in the process.
On July 6th, PokerStars will host a cocktail party at the Palms Casino and Resort that will feature Joe Cada, who won last year’s WSOP Main Event and Vanessa Selbst, who landed the NAPT Mohegan Sun top prize in April, as special guests. The event is invitation only and is effectively a press conference, offering the media the opportunity to conduct interviews with the players, as the build up to the 2010 WSOP Main Event gathers pace.
