The 2010 Aussie Millions kicked off at Melbourne’s Crown Casino on January 14th with a $1,000 + $100 No Limit Hold’em event (all cash values in this post are in Australian Dollars). With three “Day 1” flights and a marathon eighteen-hour long Day 2, a field of 919 unique players – 1,143 players including those who re-bought – took part in the curtain-raising event, which is now Australia’s most sizeable poker tournament to date. Star names included Tony and Joe Hachem, Barny Boatman, Jay Rosenkrantz, Tony Bloom, Tony G and Stewart Scott, winner of last year’s Aussie Millions main event.
193 players were left for the start of Day 2, with Xen Xenofontos in possesion of the chip lead, sitting on 186,300 in chips. Play continued for so long that the organisers seriously considered postponing the final table until the following day, but the players battled on regardless, showing grit and determination, with Matthew Ephraums eventually coming out on top to scoop the championship ring plus $200,025 for his efforts, after a lengthy heads-up battle with Brendan Edmonds.
Ephraums had been chip leader going into the final table and Edmonds had run the table over at times with his aggressive play, which made for an exciting heads-up finish. The final hand saw Edmonds raise with JdTd, with Ephraums quickly playing back with a dominating AcTc. Edmonds shoved, Ephraums called and with no help from the board for Edmonds, the title belonged to Ephraums. Edmonds took home $142,875 in consolation prize money.
Meanwhile, the second event had kicked off – a $500 + $50 No Limit Hold’em tournament, capped at 90 players, on the PokerPro virtual felt. Stewart Scott was amongst the participants after his elimination from the opening event, along with other notables such as Jonathan Karamalikis and David Steicke, but it was the in-form Andrew Hinrichsen who emerged victorious, picking up the second championship ring and $12,825 for his efforts. Although he had played very well, Hinrichsen did get a little help from the deck, picking up pocket queens to bust Shannon Vandenberg (3rd place, $6,300) and aces when heads-up with Paul Schenbri (2nd place, $8,550) whose AcJc must have looked huge until the cards were flipped over. We all need good cards from time to time!
The Aussie Millions Main Event ($10,000 + $500) kicks off January 24th, the winner being crowned on January 30th. The series closes on January 31st, with a farewell party.
