A 28 year old Lebanese man believed to be behind the recent robbery at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Berlin, the venue for this year’s European Poker Tour event in Berlin, has been taken into custody.
Several sources are claiming that the alleged mastermind of the headline grabbing heist was arrested on Sunday. It is possible that the man, who has not yet been named, is the same person originally questioned by German police, only to be released due to a lack of evidence.
Police officials in Berlin believe that the unidentified Lebanese man drove the getaway car that was recovered, as well as plotting the raid. The German newspaper ‘Bild am Sonntag’ alleged that members of the man’s family were also involved in the planning of the crime, with some of them staying at the Grand Hyatt hotel before the EPT event began.
Despite the recovery of the vehicle used in the heist, the apprehension of all four men who carried out the theft, along with the man believed to have been the brains behind the plan, the location of the stolen money still remains unknown. €242,000 was taken from the European Poker Tour event, the largest poker competition ever to be staged on German soil, which the men shared equally. That amount could have been even greater, but the bungling criminals dropped a bag filled with cash at the crime scene, reportedly containing up to €500,000
Due to the robbery, security has been increased for the inaugural Snowfest, the European Poker Tour event currently taking place in Austria. The event drew 546 entrants, around half that of EPT Berlin, but with a first prize of €445,000 up for grabs officials have seen fit to make sure there can be no repeat of events in Berlin. At the time of writing, EPT Snowfest had played down to 24 players on three tables, with Allan Baekke in the driving seat. The Dane will begin the fourth day with a two to one chip lead over his nearest rival, Brent Wheeler.
The €3,500 + €250 EPT Snowfest Main Event drew some big names, such as Daniel Negreanu, Sorel Mizzi, Richard Toth and Chad Brown, as well as ex-professional tennis player Boris Becker. The event is named due to its location in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, near Salzburg, which is a prime location for skiing and one time host of the Alpine Ski World Championships.
