European Poker Awards 2009

The results are in for the ninth annual European Poker Awards, hosted by the Aviation Club, Paris and Vitaly Lunkin has been named as “Player of the Year” for 2009.

The former backgammon player from Moscow, Russia won his second World Series of Poker bracelet in 2009, the $40,000 No Limit Hold’em 40th anniversary event. He also placed 4th in the $50,000 HORSE tournament, 2nd in the $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha and secured cashes in two other World Series events. As if that weren’t enough, he went into the World Series off the back off winning the Russian Poker Tour Main Event – quite a year for the Russian

The “Internet Player of the Year” award, which is a new addition to the ceremony this year, went to Patrik Antonius, winner of the largest online pot contested to date. The monster $1,356,946 pot took place during a high stakes heads up Pot Limit Omaha match against “Isildur1” back in November 2009. The Finn is thought to be one of, if no the highest earning online player around and is equally talented in live games, with over $2.8 million in bricks and mortar tournament winnings.

Frenchman Antoine Saout won the “Rookie of the Year” title, his 3rd place in the World Series Main Event going a long way to securing that award. Sandra Naujoks won “Europe’s Leading Lady” for the second year running, largely thanks to her victory in the Dortmund leg of the European Poker Tour.

The “Outstanding Tournament Performance” award went to Jeff Lisandro, for his incredible feats at the 2009 World Series of Poker. Not content with a total of six cashes, the Australian managed to win three bracelets: the $1,500 Seven Card Stud, the $10,000 Seven Card Stud Eight or Better and the $2,5000 Razz.

Bruno Fitoussi won the “Lifetime Achievement Award”. The Parisian has won over $2.3 million in live tournaments, including eight World Series of Poker cashes and two runner up finishes. He also won the 2001 World Heads Up Poker Championships, beating Amarillo Slim in the final.

“Poker Staff of the Year” was won by Edgar Stuchly, the man behind the Casinos Austria Poker Tour and Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Team Sport took the “Rob Gardner Award for Innovation”. Matchroom are behind the likes of the Party Poker Premier League and the Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge.
