Finding Value in Satellites

At this moment in time, practically every poker site is tempting their clientele with gateways to multi-million dollar competitions such as the WSOP, SCOOP and ECOOP, but are they really as valuable to a player as they seem? If you were to win (say) a $50 qualifier to one of the big finals, would you not have been better off taking the $10.000 prize and then deciding what you would like to do with the money?

As much as we all dream of playing with the stars in Las Vegas next month, if you were to win $10.000 at the casino this week (or sell your house, or get a bonus at work), it is unlikely that you would pay over the whole sum for a buy-in at the WSOP Main Event. However, that is what you are effectively doing if you won one of the qualifying events that these poker rooms are offering. In fact, if you paid $50 to enter the satellite and failed to qualify, what are you going to do then? If you carry on trying and get there on your tenth attempt, the value of your achievement is only a fraction of what it should have been, and effectively you are paying ten times more than the opponent who bought straight in.

The key to finding value (and isn’t that what all poker is about?) is to find the tournaments that are undersubscribed which offer a step up into the final or next qualifying event that you are targeting. There are certain times of the day when this is most likely, and you should be conscious of the opportunities that happen on the “Big 2” poker sites (Full Tilt and PokerStars) at around 5.00am GMT, when the Americans are drifting away from the sites and the European market is still in their pyjamas, or around 10.00pm GMT on the European Networks, when the British and Europeans (who are 1-3 hours ahead of GMT) stop playing. Quite often there is a significant amount of value to be had, not just in the satellite competitions, but also in the tournaments with guaranteed prize money.

Although the final game of your tournament may be at a more populated hour (or in Las Vegas!), if you have got there with value on your side, it makes the ultimate prize worth that much more.

Limit vs Big Bet Hold'em
Texas Hold’Em can be played with betting limits, or with no restrictions whatsoever. But Hold’em is Hold’em, right? Surely a good poker player can win whether the game is Fixed Limit, Pot Limit or No Limit? Although the rules of the game remain the same, there are subtle differences between Limit and “Big Bet” Hold’em. If a poker player can grasp these subtleties, there is no reason why he or she can’t succeed at all varieties of Hold’em.

Picking the Right Table
On entering your favourite poker web site, where do you aim for first? Your preferred card game, a ring game with a stake limit that you are most comfortable with, a tournament with a monster jackpot or all three? Depending on what sort of player you are, the funds that you have available and the limits you have on your time, there are thousands of opportunities to explore, and thousands more games to get involved in. However, the sharpest players use a different means of selecting their tables.

Are Poker Tournament Satellites Worth the Effort?
The dream of winning big bucks for a small outlay (sometimes none at all) drives thousands upon thousands of keen poker aficionados to online poker sites to “try their luck”, and the sites are to promote satellites to big tournaments in order to attract lower stake clients to their web sites. However, is the fantasy of hitting the big time – or at least making a mighty big difference to their bankroll – justified?

It's that time again! Here is the latest article in our A To Z of Gambling series, and this time we're looking over the letter D.

Obtaining the Best Finish in a Tournament
If you are a player who regularly – let's say one in five times – finishes in the lower payout area of the bubble in a poker tournament, it might be time to rethink your strategy later in the game. Obviously you are doing many things right to obtain that position, but in order to make your tournament play more rewarding, there might be a small adjustment you could make.

Poker Patter 3
The third instalment of “Poker Patter”, a look at the weird and wonderfully varied vocabulary that can be heard at the poker table, takes a look at terms for types of play or moves made at the felt. If you ever considered what a “crying call” might be or looked puzzled after accusations of “slowrolling”, then wonder no more.

Heads Up Strategy
In order to become a more successful poker player in the long term, particularly if you play a lot of single table tournaments, it is important to master the art of Heads Up play. Turning those second place finishes into victories can make a significant difference to your bankroll.
