When it comes to poker tournaments, Gus Hansen is one of the world’s most feared players, particularly at No Limit Hold’em. In recent years though, he has really struggled with online high stakes cash games. He ended 2009 almost $6 million down and is regarded by many in the poker community as something of a high stakes fish.
So far in 2010 though, Hansen is holding his own. This weekend, mostly through playing Pot Limit Omaha at various stakes, he has made around $190,000. His most profitable session came on Sunday, when he sat at the virtual $500 / $1,000 Pot Limit Omaha felt, to play Ashton “theASHMAN103″ Griffin for just 65 hands, coming out more than $60,000 better off and bringing 2010’s online poker earnings to around $266,000.
Another big name in the poker world is Daniel Negreanu. Like Gus Hansen, Negreanu is respected as a tournament player, but viewed by many as more than a little fishy when it comes to internet poker for big bucks. He readily admits that his online poker game needs improvement and since the end of February, Negreanu has been working hard at it, grinding at the PokerStars $100 / $200 No Limit Hold’em tables.
Initially making around $200,000 in the first month, Negreanu suffered a downswing which saw his profits reduced to less than $10,000 in a matter of days. Over the next month his bankroll followed an identical path, peaking at around $220,000 before plummeting, including a session on April 8th that saw him lose in excess of $60,000, leaving him down for the first time, by almost $10,000.
It just goes to show that no matter how good your poker may be in one area, there is always room for improvement in your game. There is certainly no shame in admitting weaknesses and looking to improve them, but it is worth remembering that these poker professionals already have millions in their respective bankrolls and are playing to prove a point, relishing the challenge of trying to beat a game, using money they can afford to lose.
To become a long term winner at poker, you don’t necessarily have to lose money trying to improve in an area of poker where you are poor. You don’t need to make it difficult for yourself, setting challenges like Hansen and Negreanu. It will be more profitable to simply focus on your strengths and to play in poker games that your records show you can beat. You don’t have to beat the best poker players at the highest stakes in order to win consistently, so make sure you’re choosing limits that you can afford and are sitting in games that you know you can beat.
Good luck at the tables.
