Huckleberry “Huck” Seed won the World Series of Poker Main Event back in1996, earning $1 million in the process. That was his second WSOP title and he has since added two more bracelets to his collection.
Seed has cashed 37 times at the WSOP and has earned close to $6 million from poker tournaments, but few victories will be as sweet as his latest, which came at the start of this week in the star studded WSOP Tournament of Champions.
This event had been shelved since 2007 after a few ultimately unsuccessful attempts to create a high profile poker competition that would crown the best of the best. This year, Harrah’s Entertainment brought the Tournament of Champions back to life with a slightly revised format, to try and provide the poker world with the equivalent of an all-star game, as found in the NBA and MLB.
Fans voted for who they would like to see take part in a No Limit Hold’em tournament, though only those players with a WSOP bracelet to their name were eligible for selection. The tournament lined up with a plethora of poker talent, including Phil Hellmuth, Johnny Chan, Phil Ivey and Doyle Brunson, so winning this event would require some serious poker playing ability. The numbers were made up by the current WSOP and WSOPE champions, the past winners of the TOC and two “sponsor exemptions”.
Seed outlasted them all to win the $500,000 first prize after beating Full Tilt Poker’s Howard Lederer heads up. The winning hand saw Lederer turn an open ended straight draw after all the money had moved to the middle pre-flop, but Seed paired his Ace on the river to seal the victory. Lederer took home $250,000 by way of consolation, while Seed proved that he is every bit as good as he was back in 1996, beating the very best in the world.
Johnny Chan, winner of the WSOP Main Event in 1987 and 1988 was eliminated from the Tournament of Champions in third place, earning $100,000 for his efforts, while 2005 Main Event champion Joe Hachem came fourth and Barry Greenstein was fifth. The highest placed woman was Jennifer Harman in 7th, who finished a place ahead of 2004 Tournament of Champions winner, Annie Duke.
The WSOP Tournament of Champions was filmed by ESPN, who will broadcast the show on August 3rd 2010, as a two hour programme.
