iPoker Network

The iPoker Network is the largest and most populated of the multi-site poker networks. The company behind its success – Playtech – is a publicly listed company on the London Stock Exchange which was established in 1999 as a software development company for the casino industry. In 2004, the company launched the iPoker Network, and through the support of a number of UK sports betting firms keen to profit from the growing popularity of online poker, quickly gained a substantial foothold in the European online poker room market.

Each of the 67 web sites that currently form the membership of the iPoker network has its own feel, independent branding and the facility to run unique games solely for its subscribers. The sites are able to organise their own bonus structure and maintain their own security and customer support. Many of the sites link back into their associated businesses, such as sports betting, casino and bingo.

Playtech recently announced the acquisition and marketing rights to the World Poker Tour, which has enhanced the company´s profile and, despite the fact that players from the USA are not permitted to play in the online poker rooms, traffic on the combined network now averages 4.350 players, peaking at over 7.300 during busy periods – usually the European evening hours.

iPoker Software

The Playtech software that powers the iPoker Network offers smooth graphics, a choice of avatars, table view and manually resizable screens to allow for players who like to multi-table. The software is very light on RAM, so it is possible to tile or cascade up to 20 tables without affecting the speed of the games. Other features include instant access to notes, player stats and hand histories, variable audio settings and the ability to add any player around the table to a “Buddy list” for easier future tracking.

The full downloadable version is also available for Mac users and there is a Flash (no download) option as well as limited option for mobile users.

Network Tournaments

In order to remain competitive with the industry leading poker sites, many of the guaranteed tournaments on the iPoker Network are “rebuy” tournaments, with the most populated being the $10 + $1 buy-in NLHE with $20.000 guaranteed prize fund. Freezeout competitions also exist with the regular daily top game being a $10 + $1 buy in for a $9.500 guaranteed pot. The big networked tournament each week is a $250.000 freezeout tournament (which once a month is played for $1million guaranteed pot) which has a $300 + $20 buy-in on an extensive satellite route. The network also hosts the European Cup of Online Poker series and has a comprehensive qualification schedule for events such as the World Series of Poker, Grosvenor UK Poker Tour, several WPT and EPT events and the Irish Winter Festival.

The network also shares a series of Jackpot Sit ´n´ Go competitions at various stake levels, with winners of a specific number of consecutive games (varies according to level) collecting a massive bonus.

Limit vs Big Bet Hold'em
Texas Hold’Em can be played with betting limits, or with no restrictions whatsoever. But Hold’em is Hold’em, right? Surely a good poker player can win whether the game is Fixed Limit, Pot Limit or No Limit? Although the rules of the game remain the same, there are subtle differences between Limit and “Big Bet” Hold’em. If a poker player can grasp these subtleties, there is no reason why he or she can’t succeed at all varieties of Hold’em.

The Value of Learning Poker Chip Tricks
Playing with poker chips is a time honored tradition at the poker table, and if you enter any poker room you will see plenty of people playing with the chips in front of them, doing all kinds of tricks and appearing to be having a very good time. In many cases this poker chip play is much more than just a game; it is a serious strategy used to give the player an edge in the game.

Know Your Outs and Pot Odds
Most poker players, even complete novices, will be aware of the concept of pot odds. To become a long term winner at poker, it is essential to put your chips into the pot only when receiving the correct price (or better). As luck evens itself out over time, if you only ever contest pots that offer better than your true odds of winning, you will make a long term profit at poker.

Fixed Limit Texas Hold'em Strategy
Fixed Limit Hold’em is far less popular than it used to be, thanks to the boom in the popularity of the No Limit form of the game, but it is still an excellent poker game in its own right. Additionally, novice Hold’em players can use Fixed Limit to learn some basic skills, before progressing to big bet Hold’em games.

Poker Table Position Strategies
Experienced students of poker strategy will be fully aware of the disciplines required to take advantage of good positions at the poker table. However it is an area that not many beginners are familiar with and many terms may be alien to them, leaving them at a disadvantage in both ring and tournament play. This is something that it is crucial that novices learn and also seek to take advantage of if they see poor positional play from other players.

Gambling A To Z: G
Once again, we take a look at the A to Z of Gambling terminology and this week we're analysing the letter "G". We'll take a look at a betting system that is guaranteed to lead to ruin, a witty if slightly offensive poker hand nickname and a type of accumulator bet commonly found in sports betting.

How To Play The Hand - Pocket Fives In Small Blind
You are in the latter stages of an online Single Table Tournament, with four of the original ten players remaining. The blinds are currently 50 / 100 and you are in the small blind. After posting your blind, your stack is 1,200. The top three finishers in the tournament are paid.
