It’s been another interesting week in the world of online poker, which began with the winding down of Full Tilt Online Poker Series XV, whose main event was won by “JackQKA”.
The 24 year old Englishman, real name Jack Ellwood, completed the first leg of an incredible Sunday double by winning the FTOPS Main Event, after initially agreeing a seven way split of the prize money, before going on to win the Ultimate Bet $200,000 Guaranteed event. Incredibly, these online results came off the back of a second place live finish in the PokerStars UKIPT in Manchester, a little over a week earlier.
On Tuesday, Jack became the centre of a peculiar thread on the Two Plus Two forums, where a poster known as “JMaverick” claimed that the FTOPS Main Event winner was only sixteen years old and that a staking deal was in place for fifty percent of his winnings. It has since emerged that the allegations were completely false and Ellwood’s identity has been confirmed, but the motives still remain unknown. It may be a malicious attempt to climb the payout ladder by another player who cashed in the tournament, or simply a case of mistaken identity.
The PokerStars Sunday Million broke yet more records with a special celebration to mark the site having dealt 40 billion hands. The bumper $4 million guaranteed prize money on offer attracted a whopping 36,169 players, which took the actual prizepool to a mammoth $7.2 million, making for one of the largest online poker tournaments ever. “RichieRichZH” eventually won out, scooping $1.1 million in the process.
A couple of major commercial deals involving online poker sites and sports stars were completed through the week. Footballer Francesco Totti has been signed up by PartyPoker as an ambassador for the company’s Italian operations, whilst Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs has agreed a deal to represent the poker arm of French company BetClic. Parker and his wife Eva Longoria have played in several charity poker events in recent years and he is described by BetClic’s creator Nicola Beraud as “a great ambassador for the brand”.
Tom “durrrr” Dwan is continuing to struggle in the high stakes online games, losing $120,000 to “Isildur1” on Friday, after dropping over $250,000 to Cole South earlier in the week. Dwan is down around $700,000 so far in 2010, to the surprise of many followers of the “nosebleed” online poker games. Brian Hastings rounded off a good week by taking more than $256,000 from Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies at $300 / $600 Pot Limit Omaha, before adding another $56,000 against Patrik Antonius.
