21 year old British poker pro Jake Cody has landed the first ever WPT event to be held in Britain, at Palm Beach Casino in London.
British players are currently enjoying a good time of it at poker tables across the world, with the best ever showing by a British contingent at the World Series of Poker coming this summer, as well as a whole host of high profile tournaments going the way of UK players this year, such as Liv Boeree’s EPT San Remo victory and last week’s EPT Vilamoura, won by Toby Lewis.
With that in mind, there was almost an air of inevitability about a home grown winner at the inaugural WPT London and the Brits didn’t disappoint, with half of the final table made up of English players.
Despite Cody’s professional poker career still being in its infancy, he has already won a tournament on the European Poker Tour back in January, when he triumphed at EPT Deauville and winning his first World Poker Tour event has dispelled any suggestion that he might be a “one hit wonder”.
The winning hand at WPT London saw Cody’s Swedish heads up opponent Nichlas Mattsson raise it up with a suited A-Q, only to be re-raised by Cody holding Q-Q. Unsurprisingly, Mattsson shoved and Cody snap called, avoiding an Ace and a flush to land the £273,783 first prize. Mattsson played well throughout and was unlucky to hit a cooler on the final hand, but took home £176,979 by way of consolation.
The other Swede at the final table was Kristoffer Thorsson, who qualified for WPT London’s Main Event online, via a PartyPoker satellite. Although Thorsson could only manage fourth place, he was in line for half of a $1 million bonus put up by the online poker site, should a PartyPoker qualifier have won the event. The other half would have been shared between all the other PartyPoker qualifiers, but sadly for them, it wasn’t to be.
WPT London only attracted 171 entries, so it will be interesting to see if the World Poker Tour choose to retain the £5,000 buy-in event in next year’s schedule. That said, the tournament did attract some star names, such as Erik Seidel, Phil Ivey and Huck Seed.
Justin “BoostedJ” Smith won the High Roller event, beating Tony G heads up. 17 players took part in the £15,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament, but the standard was high, with the likes of Luke Schwarz and Freddy Deeb also in the mix. Smith earned £141,000 for the victory.
