The Paddy Power Irish Open has been won by twenty year old Englishman James Mitchell. A well known face on the live poker circuit in Britain, the €600,000 Irish Open prize is the young player’s biggest tournament win by some distance, taking his live tournament earnings past the $1 million dollar mark.
Mitchell eventually defeated Irishman Paul Carr heads up, the damage being done when Carr got the chips into the centre with pocket queens, with Mitchell’s A6 looking useless until the river, where he spiked a second ace. After that only a few more hands were played before Carr moved in with Q5 on a flop of JJ8, with Mitchell making the call holding A8, which held up.
Mitchell had been widely regarded as the better player, but Carr definitely had the young Englishman on the ropes at times and was unlucky not emerge victorious from the 708 strong field in Dublin. Carr’s consolation prize was a cheque for €312,600.
Going into the third day’s play, Liam Flood had been sat on a huge chip stack of 400,000 – around 140,000 clear of his nearest rival – but things didn’t go right for “The Gentleman” and he eventually finished 42nd, for a €6,900 payout. The bulk of his gargantuan stack went after Flood had called a raise and an all-in re-raise holding QQ, which failed to hold up against AK, despite the initial raiser also having held AK.
Robert Sherwood was the lucky chap who outlasted over 130 other PaddyPowerPoker.com internet qualifiers, to land the “Sole Survivor” bonus worth €100,000.
The third day played down to a final table, which saw eventual heads-up duellists Paul Carr and James Mitchell sat on 1,596,000 and 1,155,000 respectively, but it was Finn Santeri Valikoski who held the chip lead, with 1,722,000. He was unable to fully capitalise on day four though, eventually finishing in third place after getting all-in with T5 and out-flopping James Mitchell’s K3, but the turn brought Mitchell a million outs and the river duly obliged. Valikoski earned €205,200 for his third place finish.
The Irish Open is widely regarded as one of the most enjoyable poker tournaments on the European circuit and this year’s event was another huge success. The tournament has been going since 1980, making it the second oldest No Limit Hold’em poker tournament in the world, behind the Main Event at the World Series of Poker.
