In a year increasingly being dubbed “Year of the Woman” in poker circles, another big name female poker professional has landed a prestigious crown, as PokerStars Pro Katja Thater won the 2010 European Poker Tour Mixed Games Player of the Year title.
Major tournaments won by ladies so far this year include the EPT San Remo event, won by Liv Boeree, Annie Duke’s victory in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship and the PokerStars North American Poker Tour Mohegan Sun Main Event, which was won by Vanessa Selbst.
Anette Obrestad, who triumphed at the World Series of Poker Europe back in 2007, is due to make her much anticipated debut at the Las Vegas equivalent next month, whilst the World Series Vice-President Ty Stewart declared recently that he expected at least three bracelets to be captured by female players.
Thater took down her EPT mixed games title after coming out on top of an eight player Deep Stack tournament, featuring eight types of poker game: Limit Deuce to Seven Triple Draw, Limit Hold’em, Limit Omaha Eight or Better, Limit Razz, Limit Stud, Limit Stud Eight or Better, No Limit Hold’em, and Pot Limit Omaha.
The tournament came about due to an eight way tie at the top of the leaderboard and Thater had to beat off the challenge of 2005 World Series of Poker winner Joe Hachem, as well as the likes of Alex Kravchenko and Scott Clements to lift the trophy. Thater also wins a package to the EPT Tallinn Main Event in August.
Katja Thater has cashed five times at the World Series of Poker and has a single bracelet, which came in 2007’s $1,500 Razz tournament. Her other cashes have come at No Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Hold’em and Seven Card Stud, showing her range of poker abilities.
Poker isn’t all about No Limit Texas Hold’em and there is a lot to be said for mixed games tournaments, which generally require a wider range of poker skills and prove a sterner test. Professionals have been clamouring for some time for the World Series of Poker Main Event to be changed to a mixed games tournament and were only partly placated by the introduction of the $50,000 HORSE tournament.
PokerStars offer a range of mixed game events, including eight game tournaments at stakes as high as $400 / $800.
