The curtain has fallen on the World Poker Tour’s LA Poker Classic, after six gruelling days of action and it was Hungarian Andras Koroknai who walked away with the title, as well as $1.7 million in prize money and a seat at the WPT World Championship in April.

The first Hungarian to win a televised World Poker Tour event, Koroknai came out top of 745 poker players, all eager to win a share of the $7,152,000 prize pool. Play at the televised final table of six began with Koroknai holding the chip lead, over 1.6 million clear of second placed Raymond Dolan, who in turn was comfortably clear of Tri Huynh in third, so it was no real surprise to see Koroknai and Dolan reach the heads up stages. In fact, the starting chip positions of all six men at the final table, reflected exactly their finishing positions at the end of the play.

When play did eventually reach the heads up stage, it was over fairly quickly. Koroknai had a massive thirteen times Dolan’s stack and the final hand saw Koroknai shove with a suited Q8 and Dolan called with a completely dominated Q4 offsuit. There was brief drama as the flop brought a 4, but it also contained two hearts to give Koroknai a flush draw, which hit on the river. Dolan’s consolation prize was just over a million dollars.

Koroknai busted Tri Huynh in third place, when his AK out-flipped the man from Vancouver, who held pocket Jacks. Huynh earned $665,140 for his efforts. Gevork Kasabyan finished fourth, getting the chips into the centre with A7 when dominated by Tri Huynh’s A9, which eventually made a full house. Kasabyan took home $450,580 in fourth place prize money. Jean-Claude Moussa won $321,840 for finishing fifth and Michael Kamran’s sixth place finish earned him $246,740.

Next up for the World Poker Tour is the Bay 101 Shooting Star at San Jose, California, beginning on March 8th. The tournament is a $9,500 + $500 No Limit Hold’em event and was last year won by Steve Brecher of Reno, who beat World Series of Poker bracelet holder Kathy Liebert heads up. After the Shooting Star, it’s on to the Hollywood Poker Open on March 20th, held at the Hollwood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
