Despite the Main Event of the World Poker Tour’s LA Poker Classic being in full swing, the Commerce Casino still found time to squeeze in a “High Roller” No Limit Hold’em event.
Although just 41 players coughed up the steep $24,000 + $1,100 buy-in, it was very much a case of quality over quantity, with big names like Erick Lindgren, Sorel Mizzi, Chris Ferguson, Justin Bonomo, Erik Seidel, John Juanda and Daniel Alaei all vying for a slice of the $1,012,700 prize pool.
Day 1 ended with the field reduced to 23 players and Andrew Lichtenberger holding the chip lead, on 237,900, comfortably ahead of Daniel Alaei with 157,800 chips. Lichtenberger was unable to make the chip lead count on the second day though, as he eventually busted out in eight place, in rather unfortunate circumstances. Jason Mercier raised pre-flop and Lichtenberger shoved, holding AK, leaving Mercier’s KT dominated. The flop brought two tens and a nine though, with the turn card another nine, making a full house for Mercier.
Mercier continued to ride his luck, winning a big coinflip to put Steve Billirakis out in seventh. Mercier had shoved AK and Billirakis made the call with nines, only for Mercier to make a straight on the river.
Entering the final table, the chip lead was as good as shared, with Scott Seiver a marginal leader on 645,500 and Daniel Alaei holding 634,500. Jason Mercier was a distant third, with 255,000.
Unsurprisingly, the two big stacks dominated and found themselves heads up, after Mercier could only finish third for $141,778. The tournament was effectively over after Seiver threw in a raise with a ragged 3h 2c and flopped two pair. Firing on the flop and the blank turn, he massively overbet the river which brought the 3d for a full house. When Alaei made the call, he immediately mucked.
It was all over the very next hand, when Alaei’s QJ was dominated by Seiver’s AJ and Alaei failed to suck out.
“High Roller” regular Scott Seiver put his good results in such competitions down to simply enjoying himself, stating “I just really enjoy these big buy-in events”. “Everyone knows each other and that makes it a good atmosphere”, he added.
Seiver picked up $425,334 and a Tag Heuer watch for winning the title, taking his total live career earnings to just under the $2 million mark.
The young man from Columbus, Ohio also had a good result at last week’s North American Poker Tour, placing fourth in the $25,000 Invitational “High Roller” Bounty event at the Venetian Hotel, Las Vegas. His earnings in that event stood at $215,000 due to the number of bounties he claimed.
