Liv Boeree Wins EPT San Remo

Liv Boeree is the PokerStars EPT San Remo champion, after coming through a 1,240 strong field to land the €1,250,000 first prize, becoming the third woman to win a European Poker Tour title in the process.

TV presenter Boeree graduated from the University of Manchester with an astrophysics degree and only discovered poker late in 2005, when taking part in the television show “UltimatePoker.com Showdown”, in which she received tuition from poker legends such as Annie Duke, Phil Hellmuth and Dave “Devilfish” Ulliot.

The lessons obviously stood her in good stead, as she has already cashed in two World Series of Poker events, as well as having a good run in last year’s WPT Championship Event and winning the 2008 Ladbrokes European Ladies Championships.

This EPT San Remo title though, is by far her biggest poker accomplishment to date and Boeree certainly didn’t have an easy time of it, with Jakob Karlsson proving a tricky customer. The heads up duel commenced with Boeree on 23,215,000 in chips to Karlsson’s 14,065,000, but within 45 minutes Karlsson had turned the tie on its head, earning a 22,500,000 to 14,700,000 lead.

The 25 year old from Kent quickly battled back with two monster pots in ten minutes, including a turned straight against Karlsson’s flopped top pair, but with the finishing line in sight, an enforced dinner break of one hour halted poker proceedings. The delay didn’t interfere with Boeree’s rhythm though, as within ten minutes of the restart, the tournament was over and the former model was crowned EPT San Remo champion.

Karlsson had started the final table as chip leader, having been among the big stacks from the first day, so it was no surprise to see him involved heads up. Boeree however, was something of a surprise package, having bought her way into the San Remo event via a €500 satellite and navigated her way to the final table, where she sat a distant fifth place, trailing the leader by some ten million chips.

The newly crowned champion described the win as “incredible” and was humble in victory, saying “Jakob was the one person I didn’t want to get heads-up against, he’s such a good player. But I ran well and I played good”. Boeree won her first poker tournament just four years ago, a £5 rebuy tournament at the Gutshot in London and now she is an EPT champion and millionaire.

EPT Snowfest winner Allan Baekke just missed out on the final table, busting out in 12th for €50,000 in prize money, ending hopes of a first two-time European Poker Tour champion. We’re sure the poker world will settle instead for the story of Liv Boeree, the Queen of San Remo.

Psychology of Poker
There are quite a lot of books written on the subject of the psychology of poker, but none better than Alan N Schoonmaker's Psychology of Poker. This book really gets into why players play like they do, and suggests various ways to overcome them, as well as enhancing your own game along the way.

Playing the Position
Position is one of the most important considerations for a poker player to ponder. Irrespective of one’s ability, experience or hand strength, playing a hand out of position is going to be difficult, as anyone else involved has far more information than you do.

Obtaining the Best Finish in a Tournament
If you are a player who regularly – let's say one in five times – finishes in the lower payout area of the bubble in a poker tournament, it might be time to rethink your strategy later in the game. Obviously you are doing many things right to obtain that position, but in order to make your tournament play more rewarding, there might be a small adjustment you could make.

Chip Etiquette
Any time you play with real poker chips (that is: whenever you aren’t playing poker on the Internet), you should observe proper chip etiquette. Good poker etiquette can make each hand go a little faster – which is almost always good as far as your fellow players are concerned. Another advantage to chip etiquette is that you are more likeable to other players. When you treat your chips like an experienced poker player, the other people at the table are more willing to treat you like an experienced poker player.

Poker Strategy: The Continuation Bet
The "Continuation Bet" is an essential part of any poker player's arsenal, but it is important to get the balance right; use the move too often and it becomes completely ineffective, but use it too little and you will be missing out on your fair share of pots at the poker table. Hopefully, we can help you master the art of continuation bet.

Playing Ace-King
Ace King can be one of the trickiest hands to play in No Limit Hold’em, particularly in tournaments. Many inexperienced, novice players win lots of small pots holding “Big Slick”, but when they lose with Ace King, they tend to lose a massive pot, costing them their tournament life.

Online Poker Tells
A “tell” is a sign that gives away a players’ hand or strategy. It may indicate that a poker player holds a good hand, a poor hand or he is bluffing, and in live play can be determined by finger tapping or shuffling in the seat, or by some distinguishable action that attracts your attention. When playing poker online, physical actions are not discernable, so it is important to identify when a player is telling you something that you need to take notice of.
