Lower League Football Value Hunt: Saturday 28th January 2012

This weekend, we’ve had a look around the bookmakers to see if the odds compilers have once again taken their eyes off the ball in the lower leagues, with the FA Cup and Liverpool vs Manchester United taking centre stage – and we’ve found a nice little bet in League One.

In League One, Leyton Orient look a good bet to beat struggling Colchester United and I was surprised to see a best price of 2.25 available. I can only imagine that the compilers have come to this conclusion based on the longer term trend of Orient’s home form (just four wins in 14 games) but I think they’re making an error.

Orient have had a tricky run of fixtures in recent weeks, but have still collected a fair number of points. Wins away at Preston and Stevenage prove that Orient are no mugs and even if their home form has been a little off, they still managed to beat Charlton – who are well clear at the top of the league – on New Year’s Eve.

But this bet isn’t just about Orient and how good they may or may not be – it’s about opponents Colchester too, and there can be no doubt about how bad they are of late. Thumped 6-1 at home against Stevenage on Boxing Day, only a home win over lowly Exeter prevents their recent run of form from looking like a complete and utter disaster. They were even beaten at home by basement side Chesterfield last week.

The Essex side have scored just one goal away from home in their last five matches and just 12 over the season so far, and I really can’t see what’s going to change for them on the road this Saturday.

Advice:
Leyton Orient vs Colchester United – Home Win @ 2.25 (BetVictor)
