The World Poker Tour Bay 101 Shooting Star, a poker tournament with a twist, drew to a close this weekend as McLean Karr emerged triumphant.
Day 1 of the Shooting Star was split into two, with a total of 332 players buying into the $10,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament. 42 of these were “Shooting Stars” – big name poker players, such as Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Gus Hansen and Chris Ferguson, who carried a $5,000 bounty on their heads. Additional bonuses of $10,000 were up for grabs too, awarded to the overnight Day 1 chip leaders.
The poker was fast and furious as everyone tried to pick up bonus money and Day 2 began with just 126 players remaining. The chip lead bonuses were eventually awarded to Vanna Tea (Day 1A) and Eugene Katchalov (Day 1B).
In the first blind level of Day 2, former World Series of Poker Main Event winner Hellmuth was all in against JC Tran, an ordeal he survived, kick starting an all-action surge to the chip lead, where he ended the day’s play. Other big names like Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein and Howard Lederer were not so fortunate, all busting on the second day, which played down to just 27 players.
An interesting prop bet may emerge from Day 2, as Daniel Negreanu needled Hellmuth by claiming that he was an 800-1 shot to win the World Series of Poker “Players Championship”, the new mixed games event set to replace the $50,000 HORSE tournament. Although initially a joke, the pair discussed Negreanu’s comments in detail and some form of bet may yet happen, though it seems the price will be more like 250-1.
Day 3 saw the field thinned to a final six, with the likes of “Miami” John Cernuto and Tom Marchese biting the dust, while Hellmuth held onto his chip lead for most of the day. Andy “BKiCe” Seth took over the mantle in the closing stages though, running the table over after busting Scotty Nguyen in eight place and finishing up comfortably ahead of Hellmuth, with 2,164,000 to 1,433,000.
The final day kicked off with all eyes on the “Poker Brat”, but it was not to be for the eleven times World Series bracelet winner. In fact, he was first to exit, after slowplaying pocket queens and getting all-in against Seth, who held a suited AJ. No help came from the flop or the turn, but an ace on the river caused Hellmuth to curl up into a ball after leaving the stage.
Seth would soon find himself heads up with McLean Karr, who seemed an unlikely final tablist after being crippled on Day 3, but his patience payed off. Eventually, Seth found himself all in with two fours against Karr’s two eights, gaining no help from the board, to secure Karr his first WPT title and $878,500 in prize money.
