Microgaming Poker Network

The Microgaming Poker Network is part of Microgaming Software Systems Ltd., an Isle of Man based company, which launched the first ever online casino back in 1994 and boasts the world record for the payout on a casino progressive slot machine of $6.374.434. The poker side of the business was formally known as Prima Poker and the network includes such notable sites as Ladbrokes Poker, Unibet Poker and Betway.

Traffic

The network has been one of the most popular and sturdiest online poker networks in the industry, and has remained in the top 10 poker networks due to its innovative software developments and game variations – with an average of two thousand players online, peaking to over four thousand cash players during the European evenings (Players from the USA are not allowed). The network is unique inasmuch as it allows selected sites to “ring-fence” some of their own games exclusively for their own membership. For example Ladbrokes and Unibet offer “non networked” ring tables with stakes of $2/$4 which are only accessible by members of their site. Players from other skins on the network will not be able to access these games.

Amongst the unique variants of the games on offer are “Survivor Tournaments”. These run in the same manner as regular MTTs except that, at selected intervals, short stacked players are removed from the game – allowing it to flow quicker and reach its conclusion sooner. Ring tables are also provided where an ante is paid every hand as well as the blinds, and bounty Sit ´n´ Go tournaments have just been introduced. The standard of play on the network is quite strong. At the micro-limits there are both loose players and small time, regular players working towards clearing their bonuses with tight play. On the low and medium stake tables, it is possible to find a selection of players who have migrated onto the poker tables from a successful day at the predominately sports betting orientated skins, and you will also find some very competitive multi-table tournaments around the $5 buy-in.

Microgaming Software

The software for the Microgaming Network has been developed in-house, looks basic and is fairly light on RAM, allowing those who wish to play multiple games to have 10 games in progress at any one time. There is a version for Mac, but many of the skins choose to offer just the Windows version of the software and the comprehensive Flash version.

The skins on the network provide independent customer support, host many of their own exclusive games and offer their own promotions. There is no rakeback allowed on sites affiliated to the Microgaming Network, so many sites opt to have their own loyalty schemes offering to exchange player points for tournament buy-ins or redeem for cash. There is a solid mix of guaranteed prize money tournaments throughout the day and many qualifiers and satellite routes available to the big weekend network games at the weekend – $30K guaranteed freezeout on a Saturday and $100K guaranteed freezeout on a Sunday. There are also satellite network routes available to win packages to major live poker events such as the WSOP.

Poker Games

As well as offering the industry standards such as Texas Hold´em, Omaha and 7 Card Stud, skins on the Microgaming Network also offer ring games and multi-table tournaments in 5 Card Draw, 5 Card Stud and Razz.

Poker Table Position Strategies
Experienced students of poker strategy will be fully aware of the disciplines required to take advantage of good positions at the poker table. However it is an area that not many beginners are familiar with and many terms may be alien to them, leaving them at a disadvantage in both ring and tournament play. This is something that it is crucial that novices learn and also seek to take advantage of if they see poor positional play from other players.

Hold'em's Odd(s) Book – gives you an edge
In 1996, Mike Petriv wrote the first fully-comprehensive book on poker odds - "Hold'em's Odd(s) Book – gives you an edge". Its cheap, spiral bound format belies the content between its covers and the book has provided an invaluable source of information for poker players at all stages of their game, the world over.

Harrington on Hold'em: Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments
Dan Harrington is one of the most respected poker players of recent years. Already a chess master and winner of the World Cup of Backgammon before he turned his attention to poker, Harrington was the first player ever to make consecutive appearances at the final table of the Main Event in the World Series of Poker 2003/2004. Ironically nicknamed “Action Dan” due to his solid, but effective style, Harrington has compiled a three set definitive series of books on tournament play, strategies and winning big.

Flopping Two Pair
Flopping two pair in No Limit Hold’em is a great feeling and it is definitely a hand you want to play aggressively, but it is important to remember that not all flopped two pair holdings are the same.

Heads Up Strategy
In order to become a more successful poker player in the long term, particularly if you play a lot of single table tournaments, it is important to master the art of Heads Up play. Turning those second place finishes into victories can make a significant difference to your bankroll.
