Ongame Network

The Ongame Poker Network is a vast European network of online poker rooms, casinos and sports betting operations that has grown rapidly since rebranding in 2006. The parent company, Bwin Interactive Entertainment, started in Vienna in 1997 as one of the first companies to offer online “betting in running”, and its initial success allowed it to buy into the online casino and cash games industries, before developing its own poker platform in 2004. Further acquisitions followed and the company head office move to Gibraltar as the company changed its name from “betandwin” to the now internationally recognised brand.

The 27 web sites that belong to the Ongame network amass between them an average of 2600 players online at any one time, with the peak periods witnessing the highest traffic, with the number of players around 5800. Unusually for a poker site, the greater number of players is seen during the early evening rather than later at night, and this is possibly due to sports betting customers filling the void between afternoon and evening sports action. Despite this, it is only a few of the micro-tables that see loose play, with some very tight bonus hunters occupying the low and mid-game tables.

Ongame Software

The software driving the network is the advanced P5 Poker Engine, developed in-house by Bwin Interactive. It is incredibly stylish, with crisp playing action, fantastic graphics and a full range of statistical and analytical options for the poker player. Resizable tables are only available in the Windows version at present, and there is a useful one click on-screen “table tiling” icon, which automatically resizes and redistributes your open tables. Because of the juice used by the software, it is difficult to play more than four tables at any one time. This is one of the planned improvements due soon, plus a more comprehensive version for the Mac and Flash/Java software. The Ongame Network can also be downloaded onto your mobile for online play from anywhere in the world.

Network Tournaments

Sites on the OnGame Network have an even distribution of freezeout and rebuy tournaments – which is great for choice, but the number of tournaments with guaranteed prize funds suffers as a result. Generally, you will find well subscribed games up to $5 buy-in offering prizes up $7.000 during the week, and slightly larger at the weekend. The network “highlight” tournament is called the “ChampionChip” – a $190+ $10 multi-table tournament with a guaranteed prize fund of $250K. There are a series of qualifiers and sit ´n´ go satellites to make the entry fee less painful, and sites on the network also have a number of innovative and potentially lucrative promotions, with qualifying clients gaining exclusive entry to a number of well funded freeroll events.

The network has recently introduced a series of “Coinflip” and “Chip Chaser” events – effectively Sit ´n´ Go tournaments where players are either all-in every hand or all-in every hand after a 10 minute period – and offer cash games in all versions of Texas Hold´em (short-handed is often played 5 handed on this network), Omaha and Omaha Hi/lo, 7 Card Stud and Stud Hi/Lo. The network also has a fairly active ring game section for 5 Card Draw Poker, with FL and PL games available from $0.05/$0.10.

52 Greatest Moments in the World Series of Poker
With the imminent qualifiers for the 41st World Series of Poker starting to be introduced on many online poker sites, it is a good time to look back at one of the best books relating to this famous competition. “52 Greatest Moments in the World Series of Poker” chronicles some of the great games seen at the WSOP between 1970 and 2006 (the book was published in 2007).

Sklansky's System For Winning NL Hold'em Tournaments
Although we all like to believe that we are the best player at the poker table, it simply cannot be true all of the time. We all find ourselves playing in No Limit Hold’em tournaments where there is a superior opponent crushing the table, or even an inferior opponent who is running good and proving to be a menace. Perhaps you are a complete novice and almost every player in the competition is better than you. How can we best approach these situations and increase our chances of winning the tournament?

Big Stack Strategy
Playing the big stack in a poker tournament can be great fun, but it is important not to get carried away and to avoid the common pitfalls associated with a chip lead.

Obtaining the Best Finish in a Tournament
If you are a player who regularly – let's say one in five times – finishes in the lower payout area of the bubble in a poker tournament, it might be time to rethink your strategy later in the game. Obviously you are doing many things right to obtain that position, but in order to make your tournament play more rewarding, there might be a small adjustment you could make.

Are Poker Tournament Satellites Worth the Effort?
The dream of winning big bucks for a small outlay (sometimes none at all) drives thousands upon thousands of keen poker aficionados to online poker sites to “try their luck”, and the sites are to promote satellites to big tournaments in order to attract lower stake clients to their web sites. However, is the fantasy of hitting the big time – or at least making a mighty big difference to their bankroll – justified?

Adjusting From Online Poker To Live Tournaments
Live poker tournaments are great fun and even if you only play your poker on the internet, it is worth making the effort to get to your local card room or casino every once in a while. There are, of course, notable differences between live poker and online poker - here's what to expect when switching from online poker tournaments to the live game, for the first time.

Opening Hand Selection - Hold It or Fold It
Probably, the most influential decision you will ever make in a game of poker is whether to play or fold your pocket cards. Although there is a saying that “You have to be in it to win it”, knowing when to play the hand you are dealt, and when to fold, is vitally important.
