PartyPoker Big Game IV Underway

The PartyPoker Big Game IV is officially underway, having kicked off at 20:00 GMT on Sunday April 11th. The 48 hour cash game at London’s Les Ambassadeurs club features a “Big Brother” style format, where players can be voted off and some of the biggest names in poker will take part.

Sadly, the name of “Isildur1” is missing from the list, as the anonymous Swedish online poker sensation pulled out at the last minute. There had been a real hope that the mystery player would attend and discussions had apparently taken place between him and the show’s organisers Matchroom Sport, with speculation suggesting that he may even finally reveal his identity to the poker world. Tony G, who does take part in the programme, apparently received a text message from Isildur1 saying only “Sry for not coming, take care bud”. Cynics may suggest that the whole idea was nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Despite Isildur1’s absence, there are still plenty of well known poker faces involved in Big Game IV and the opening line up consisted of Luke Schwartz, Jennifer Tilly, Neil Channing, Dusty Schmidt, Isaac Haxton and David Viffer, all of whom bought in for £20,000, with Laurence Grondin and Paul Marrow buying in for £10,000.

No time was wasted in putting on a show for the cameras, as David Viffer put Tilly to an all-in decision on just the second hand, when he re-raised with an offsuit K9 and flopped a K. Tilly, holding AJ, turned top pair but the sheer aggression shown by Viffer throughout the hand, coupled with a dangerous looking board showing straight and flush possibilities, meant she was forced to surrender to the all-in on the river.

Robert Williamson III joined the table a little after 23:00, as Paul Marrow’s 77 was outflopped by Viffer’s AQ (all in pre-flop), a hand which left Marrow down to the felt. Justin Bonomo was second to join the table, as Dusty Schmidt bore the brunt of the first lot of “eviction” votes at around 2.30 on Monday morning.

Jennifer Tilly really got stuck into the table all night, making around £33,000 before cashing out at around 5.15. One of her better plays was three betting the river with 88 on a rainbow board of 396 A A, shoving David Viffer and his 94 off the best hand. Sam Trickett was Tilly’s replacement at the poker table.

Phil Laak joined the PartyPoker Big Game IV at around 6.20, a time that, according to Jesse May, is “so late it’s early”. Around 40 minutes later, Robert Williamson III was voted off the table, to be replaced by Bodo Szbrezny.

Playing Poker when Short Stacked
Being short-stacked is a position that no poker player likes to find themselves in. You have to acknowledge that you are getting towards the end of your participation in a game and either hang on in for as long as you can, or take a chance with a shove. Neither option is wrong, but when it comes to choosing which hand you want to be all-in on, you need to be sure you are aware of all the facts.

Leveraging Bets in No Limit Hold'em
Bet leveraging is a technique used by many of the top poker professionals to initially imply that they have a good hand, and then follow it up with hard chips if they have to. It is a strategy that will add incredible value to your game, as it should win you a lot more hands whilst reducing the potential risks that you may have to take.

Limit vs Big Bet Hold'em
Texas Hold’Em can be played with betting limits, or with no restrictions whatsoever. But Hold’em is Hold’em, right? Surely a good poker player can win whether the game is Fixed Limit, Pot Limit or No Limit? Although the rules of the game remain the same, there are subtle differences between Limit and “Big Bet” Hold’em. If a poker player can grasp these subtleties, there is no reason why he or she can’t succeed at all varieties of Hold’em.

How To Play Three Of A Kind
Every poker player loves to hit three of a kind on the flop. It’s a great feeling as the pay offs can be so good, but it can be a challenge to extract as many chips as possible from your opponent. This article will hopefully make it much easier for you to get paid off with your three of a kind.

Psychology of Poker
There are quite a lot of books written on the subject of the psychology of poker, but none better than Alan N Schoonmaker's Psychology of Poker. This book really gets into why players play like they do, and suggests various ways to overcome them, as well as enhancing your own game along the way.

Double or Nothing SitnGo Strategy
Double or Nothing SitnGo's are a special type of SnG where you either double your entry stake or walk away with nothing. Normally consisting of 10 player tables, they are an excellent option for players who consistently get into third or fourth places in regular SnGs, as 5 of the 10 players are winners.

Picking the Right Table
On entering your favourite poker web site, where do you aim for first? Your preferred card game, a ring game with a stake limit that you are most comfortable with, a tournament with a monster jackpot or all three? Depending on what sort of player you are, the funds that you have available and the limits you have on your time, there are thousands of opportunities to explore, and thousands more games to get involved in. However, the sharpest players use a different means of selecting their tables.
