1989 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Phil Hellmuth is famous for a lot of things. Arguably the best No Limit Hold’em tournament player that has ever lived, he possesses more World Series bracelets than anyone in history, with eleven titles in his collection.
He has earned over $11 million from live poker tournaments and recently topped an inflation adjusted all time money list.
Hellmuth is also well known for his bad temper and his outbursts at the poker table. Frequently threatening to walk out when things don’t go his way, he once came to blows with another player and name-calling is commonplace.
He claimed that if luck weren’t involved in poker, he’d win every tournament going and many in the poker world dislike his seemingly arrogant attitude. Last year, he turned up at the World Series Main Event dressed as Julius Caesar.
No stranger to controversy and publicity stunts then, Hellmuth is rarely far from the limelight, so it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear of Hellmuth’s latest stunt – an appearance in the video to the latest song by rapper Ludacris, called “Sex Room”.
The poker professional can be seen about one-third into the music video, playing poker with UltimateBet chips and flashing the UB logo to all and sundry. Looking ridiculous and totally out of place surrounded by almost naked ladies and other rappers, Hellmuth’s presence in the video is totally inexplicable. Or is it?
It is almost certainly a well timed PR move by the UltimateBet team, with the World Series of Poker just around the corner. UB are now publicising a massive super satellite to the World Series, which is due to be held next week and which features 25 $12,000 Main Event packages as prizes. In addition, all online qualifiers who take their seat in the Main Event earn a cut of UltimateBet’s progressive prize pool, which grows by $5,000 whenever a player qualifies for the Main Event on the site.
The ridiculous nature of Hellmuth’s appearance has certainly got the poker world talking, including fellow players; Nick Phillips recently Tweeted “LOL @ Phil Hellmuth in a Ludacris rap video…”.
