Playing Multi-Table Poker

There are many advantages to being able to play multiple tables at the same time – not least the option of winning more money – but in order to do it successfully, you need to be conscious of the best types of games to play and where to play them.

The easiest games to multi-table are the very tight “Double or Nothing” Sit’n'Go single table tournaments, where your participation would normally be kept to a minimum. In these games, where the top five of ten players double their stake, being the person with the most chips at the end of the game is not as important as remaining in it for the maximum amount of time.

It is better to avoid turbo SnG tournaments with rapidly increasing blinds, and ring games – where the knowledge of how an adversary behind you might react to your bet is necessary for you to make a successful decision. Similar areas of poker in which you can avoid making the tough calls and require little knowledge of the table are the early stages of larger tournaments.

Many multi-tablers will start one or two tournaments, wait until they get to mid-game and then start one or two more. They continue this “program” until they are playing in a maximum of six or eight, and by keeping an eye on what level of blind each game is on can determine where they are in each game at any given time.

Multi-tabling has other advantages as well as the possibility of winning multiple games at the same time. Players who have subscribed to a poker room with a rakeback facility will find that they accumulate their bonus quicker and also gain multiple “player points”, which themselves can be used for entering valuable tournaments and satellite competitions. You will also find that you are able to play sharper and identify more types of betting action than you would have if you were getting a little bored playing the same slow moving game all the time – a bonus that will serve you well when you return to playing one ring game at a time!

Options for multi-tabling are available for most online poker rooms. You may need to check that your computer is capable of handing so many games at the same time, because some of the sites are heavy on their graphics and you may find you computer slowing down or freezing at a vital point of the action. The best way to do this is to go into the play area of the site on which you propose to multi-table, and open up a series of play games. This way, it will not matter should your computer freeze, and will give you an idea to the limit of real games you can play at the same time.

The key to successful multi-tabling is to start with just two or three tables and build up as your confidence and ability to make quick decisions grows. Soon you will find a screenful of games taking place simultaneously and a potful of cash and bonuses the next time you visit the Cashier!
