The PokerStars Sunday Million attracted its biggest ever field over the weekend, thanks to the extra $500,000 in prize money added to the guaranteed pool of $1.5 million. The half million bonus attracted 19,377 eager participants with an eye on a share of the whopping $3,875,400 in the fund.
The previous record for the largest Sunday Million field was set in November 2009, when the weekly $200 + $15 event attracted 18,283 runners, but the number of players on January 31st eclipsed that figure by over a thousand. To add a further sense of scale, the comparable Full Tilt $1.5 million guaranteed event held on the same day and with a similar $200 + $16 buy-in, attracted a relatively meager 7,578 players.
“OX45AL” eventually took the Sunday Million down after more than twelve hours of play, with “celofyz33” finishing runner up. The latter had pushed with Ac4c, to find the former sitting on pocket queens. With no help for celofyz33 from the 3-7-K flop, the turn offered a token 4, but a J on the river sealed victory and the $550,000 first prize for OX45AL, not a bad night’s work. The runner up’s efforts were rewarded with $332,000 and “eMarkM” finished third, for prize money of $244,616. Again, by way of comparison, the Full Tilt $1.5 million guaranteed was won by “BankOfSweden”, who dealt with “extassyman” for just over $210,000 each.
The record breaking number of players competing in the Sunday Million led to only the third ever instance of more than 50,000 real money players at the PokerStars cash tables, with a peak of 50,820 on the Sunday night.
In other PokerStars related news, with Super Bowl XLIV fast approaching on February 7th, the world’s largest online poker site had put up two pairs of tickets to the big game as prizes in two separate $11 buy in tournaments, the same day as the record breaking Sunday Million. The winners received the tickets in addition to the usual payouts, plus $1,000 each in spending money.
On a more somber note, PokerStars have pledged $746,390.26 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Stars are matching the figure raised by their players, giving a total of $1,492,780.52 in donations. They had been collecting within hours of hearing news about the disaster, which has so far affected over three million people. Well done to PokerStars and all those who donated.
