Psychology of Poker

Psychology of PokerThere are quite a lot of books written on the subject of the psychology of poker, but none better than Alan N Schoonmaker’s Psychology of Poker. This book really gets into why players play like they do, and suggests various ways to overcome them, as well as enhancing your own game along the way.

Schoonmaker is superbly qualified to write on the subject of poker. He acquired his PhD in industrial psychology at the University of California and wrote for many years on the subject of psychology for Poker Digest. He is an online player himself, although only at modest stakes as he says “maximizing my profits is much less important to me than relaxing and learning about people”. Alan can be found playing the lower limits of the online tables, where he claims to meet more maniacs, more rocks, more oddballs and more “deluded experts” which make his game more interesting.

In the book, Schoonmaker highlights that the important role of poker psychology is to make us understand why we do what we do. He elaborates on this perfectly in his series of “Styles Grids” and makes it one of his key goals to determine what our internal motivations are for playing poker, and why we succeed or fail. He questions whether we have the “right stuff” to make it in the world of poker and asks whether it is our need for socialization, rather than competition, which drives us to the virtual poker rooms each evening. The insight into egotisms and rationality is spellbinding without being full of psychoactive phraseology, and Schoonmaker breaks down poker players’ psyche into the “eight principals of poker”, allowing each reader to explore their reasons for playing poker without the need to be judgmental.

Ultimately we are all somewhere between Tight Passive and Loose Aggressive poker players, but our development before the dawn of the Internet has a huge influence on the way in which we play poker. A recommended read!

Freeroll Poker Tournaments
If you're relatively new to poker and you're looking to develop your bankroll, freeroll tournaments provide an excellent opportunity to do so. Free to enter but with real prize money up for grabs, freeroll tournaments are a must for all those poker players looking to add to their bankrolls with minimum outlay. Here's a selection of the best forthcoming freeroll tournaments:

How To Play The Hand - NL Tournament, Pocket Ks-Qs
You are playing in an online No Limit Hold’em multi-table tournament and the event is somewhere in the middle stages. There are nine players in total at the poker table and for this hand, you are in middle position. The blinds are currently at 75 / 150. You have a stack of 2,200 chips and the action is folded around to you.

Online Poker Tells
A “tell” is a sign that gives away a players’ hand or strategy. It may indicate that a poker player holds a good hand, a poor hand or he is bluffing, and in live play can be determined by finger tapping or shuffling in the seat, or by some distinguishable action that attracts your attention. When playing poker online, physical actions are not discernable, so it is important to identify when a player is telling you something that you need to take notice of.

Hand Reading vs Ego
“I knew you had that!” – the call of the losing poker player. We’ve all heard it, in fact we’ve probably all said it once or twice too, but it’s a classic example of ego interfering with common sense at the poker table. Hand reading is such an important part of becoming a winning poker player and it is essential that nothing impairs the decision making process. Here are the classic mistakes to cut out of your poker game.

Playing Ace-King
Ace King can be one of the trickiest hands to play in No Limit Hold’em, particularly in tournaments. Many inexperienced, novice players win lots of small pots holding “Big Slick”, but when they lose with Ace King, they tend to lose a massive pot, costing them their tournament life.

Playing the Ace Rag
The majority of novice poker players hold on to too many unprofitable hands, one of the most common being the “rag ace”. The exact definition of “rag ace” can be argued over, but essentially, it is an ace with a weak kicker, usually Ace-Ten or lower.

Poker Betting Patterns
Read any article relating to poker strategy and it’s highly likely that you’ll encounter the term “betting patterns”. To beat a poker game, it is essential to take on board as much information as possible in order to make informed decisions, and studying your opponents and the manner of their bets is a huge part of that.
