Racing Post Poker and Horse Racing

The Cheltenham Festival, National Hunt horse racing’s end of season extravaganza, where the best horses in training do battle for some of the most prestigious titles in the game, is just a month away. This season’s Gold Cup looks set to be a thriller, as old rivals Kauto Star and Denman lock horns once more.

If you’re a fan of both horse racing and poker, it really is worth checking out Racing Post Poker. A package to the Cheltenham Gold Cup was given away this weekend in a $5 tournament and these promotions are not uncommon, with past poker tournament giveaways including tickets to the Breeders Cup and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, as well as events with bounties on the heads of Racing Post journalists, tipsters and even jockeys. New players receive a 100% bonus up to £200 and there are lots of new player freerolls to get involved with.

With this fantastic marriage of poker and horse racing in mind, here is a selection of horses whose owners could have been poker fans.

Ramvaswani – an Irish bred bay, this seven year old is still in training. Yet to win a race from over 50 starts, the gelding has picked up a little over £9,000 in place prize money. His namesake, the London based poker pro Ram Vaswani, has fared considerably better in his career with an EPT title, a World Series of Poker bracelet and over $3 million in career winnings.

Hold Em – Another Irish bred horse, this eight year old contested last year’s RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, but was pulled up. He did manage to land a novices’ chase at Uttoxeter the following month but after being brought down in this year’s Victor Chandler Chase, he had to be put down.

Annie Duke – In 2006, Jim Switlyk decided to name one of his newly acquired horses after the prominent poker professional. The equine version of Annie was trained by Tom Fanning and featured on the New Jersey harness racing scene, having some minor success.

Bust Out – The worst case scenario for a player involved in a poker tournament, the chestnut gelding by the same name had no such misfortunes, winning six of his twelve career starts, including the Irish Arkle in 2003, under jockey Barry Geraghty.

Full House – Winner of five races on the flat, including the valuable 2007 Ascot Stakes, the opening race of the Royal Ascot meeting. The horse later embarked on a career over the jumps, which wasn’t nearly as successful.

Playing Short Handed Poker
There are two meanings for the term “Short handed” in poker games. The one most frequently applied, is when players are playing on a ring table comprising of only 6 players, however the phrase can also relate to the endgame in a tournament or single table Sit'n'Go, where the number of players has decreased as the competition progresses - ultimately resulting in a “Heads Up” scenario. Short handed poker is an area of the game that every poker player will experience at some stage, and should learn how best to manage to their favor.

Poker Strategy: What Makes A Great Poker Player?
Anybody can learn to play poker – that’s one of the most appealing aspects of the game – but to truly master the game can take a lifetime. There are many different approaches to poker; different styles, tactics and ways to win. However, all of the best poker players share a few common traits.

Poker Patter 4

Hand Reading vs Ego
“I knew you had that!” – the call of the losing poker player. We’ve all heard it, in fact we’ve probably all said it once or twice too, but it’s a classic example of ego interfering with common sense at the poker table. Hand reading is such an important part of becoming a winning poker player and it is essential that nothing impairs the decision making process. Here are the classic mistakes to cut out of your poker game.

The Gap Concept
Introduced by professional poker player and author David Sklansky in his book “Tournament Poker For Advanced Players”, the “Gap Concept” is an important principle to understand in order to improve as a poker player, particularly in tournaments.

Gambling A To Z: B
It's time for part two of the Gambling A to Z, which is of course the letter "B". In each of our A to Z articles, we take a look at topics related to gambling and today, the subjects are "Bad Beat", "Blackjack" and "Blinds".

Obtaining the Best Finish in a Tournament
If you are a player who regularly – let's say one in five times – finishes in the lower payout area of the bubble in a poker tournament, it might be time to rethink your strategy later in the game. Obviously you are doing many things right to obtain that position, but in order to make your tournament play more rewarding, there might be a small adjustment you could make.
