Recommended Books on Gambling Jan 2010

Whether it’s something to occupy you between hands at the poker table, something to keep in the smallest room of the house or simply a way to relax at the end of a hard day, you just can’t beat a good book. Here’s a look at some of the gambling world’s latest literature.

Mastering Betfair” by Pete Nordsted was released at the end of October 2009 and is primarily aimed at those who play the betting exchanges. The book offers basic trading strategies and points out what not to do, to hopefully improve the reader’s trading skills. The author feels that “Mastering Betfair” could appeal to those who use the stock exchanges too, as trades on sporting markets are usually wrapped up far more quickly than in the business world. RRP: £24.99

Heads-Up Poker” is set for a March 2010 release and is the work of professional poker player Paul Wasicka and Charley Swayne, an author and lecturer who specialises in poker. Wasicka won the 2007 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship beating the likes of TJ Cloutier and 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Joe Hachem, so is well qualified to offer instruction on Heads-Up poker. The book claims to teach the reader all about one on one play, including how to handle aggressive players, manipulate passive ones and how to play poor hands to make profit. RRP: £12.46

Breaking the Roulette Wheel” is the story of Balvinder Sambhi’s roulette system that was featured in UK newspapers in October 2010 and was published the following month. The system has been tested for two months without a losing day, before the author found himself banned from every Grosvenor casino in Britain. It requires a starting bankroll of £2,500 and the book itself is not exactly cheap, but makes for interesting reading all the same. RRP: £100

The Godfather of Poker” was released in November 2009 and tells the story of the Doyle Brunson, from his humble Texan beginnings to the legendary status that he enjoys today, with everything in between. He talks candidly about his time in jail, the loss of friends to drug abuse and his recovery from melanoma, as well as his incredible poker achievements. Full of amusing anecdotes and strict self examination, “The Godfather of Poker” is a must read for any poker fan. RRP: £16.83

Marten Jensen’s “Big Book of Slots and Video Poker” explains everything you need to know about slots and video games, featuring instructions for 200 major games, as well as some of the best strategies and insider secrets to beat them. The book also includes advice on money management, the history of slots and plenty of charts, photos and illustrations. RRP: £9.33

Five Common Blackjack Mistakes
If you enter a casino armed with the most advanced of Blackjack strategies, you will still be facing a house edge, which guarantees the casino a long term profit. With Blackjack, the only way to beat the casino is to learn to count cards, which will almost certainly result in you being removed from the premises. So what to do?

Think Like A Professional Gambler
One of the key factors in taking your gambling up to the next level, is the correct mental attitude. A professional gambler must show discipline and be in control of his or her emotions at all times, as well as working extremely hard. Professional gamblers think differently to the average punter too, as we will discover in this article.

Blackjack Strategy: Table Selection
There are many different tactics and strategies that can be employed when playing the popular casino game of blackjack, and each one will have an effect on the overall house edge. Learning basic blackjack strategy and how to count cards are the two methods that will bring down the house edge the most, but these require a good memory and practice. A much simpler strategy, that can be just as crucial to reducing house edge and boosting your bankroll, is simply selecting the right blackjack table.

Gambling A To Z: I
In the latest edition of our "A to Z of Gambling" series, we'll be taking a look at the letter "I". We'll be discussing an important poker concept, in the form of "Implied Odds", as well as looking at different aspects of the roulette table with the "Inside Bets", and we'll reveal why taking "Insurance" when playing blackjack is a mistake.

Three Card Poker Tips
Three Card Poker is a very common online casino game - you may know it as “Three Card Brag” or “Casino Brag” – and is played “live” frequently in casinos in the States. It can be one of the most lucrative games for casinos, depending on the payout table used, but also offers the possibility for system players to make a profit once you are aware of the odds of winning.

Gambling A To Z: E
The fifth part of our "Gambling A to Z" series is here and today we'll be looking at "Edge", "Expectation" and "Exacta".

Slot Machines Are Random - Fact
When I used to work in a Licensed Betting Office, I quickly became fed up with the constant complaints from the regular players of the Fixed Odds Betting Terminals (FOBTs) that the slot machines were not random at all, but rigged to pay out at certain times. You hear it in casinos up and down the country too, but it's incorrect. Slot machines and FOBTs are random. Here's why:
