Tuesday 19th January saw the launch of Full Tilt Poker’s innovative “Rush Poker”, which could revolutionise the online poker world. An incredibly simple yet highly dramatic concept, Rush Poker allows players to take part in literally hundreds of hands per hour, by eliminating the need to see a hand to its conclusion.

Dubbed “the ultimate high-speed poker experience” by it’s creators, Rush Poker is just like the regular Full Tilt tables, in that players choose their desired game from the lobby, selecting the type of poker game and limits they wish to play and are then seated at a table. The twist is that the player joins what is termed a “player pool” and can be seated against any eight opponents from that pool. Participants play until their own action in the hand is over, at which point they are “rushed” away to a different table, with eight others from the player pool and are thrust straight back into the action, with no waiting around.

As crazy as it might sound, if a player decides that his or her preferred course of action during a Rush Poker hand is to fold, then they simply click the fold button and are moved instantly to another poker table, with two new hole cards, at the start of a new hand. Similarly, if a player takes down a pot, with or without a showdown, they are moved straight to another hand.

Players don’t even need to wait until it’s their turn to act. By using the “Quick Fold” feature, a player can be moved to a new table before their opponents have decided what to do! Rush Poker truly is the action junkie’s dream come true.

It should be interesting to see how it develops. Initial interest in the game is high, due to the novelty value. Although there are obvious positives in the cutting-edge format, such as the sheer number of hands a player is involved in, which should keep even the worst case of ADHD placated, there seem to be negatives too. As it is impossible to study opponents, getting a read on another player isn’t likely to happen, taking a lot of enjoyment out of the game for the player that enjoys the psychology of poker, as well as nullifying the edge many winning players have over part timers.

Concerns from the purists aside, this exciting new way to play the game has at least got people talking about poker and it’s always pleasing to see progressive thinking from big companies. It should also be interesting to see how Full Tilt’s rivals respond to such a creative concept.
