Sam Farha took down his third World Series of Poker title on day 18 of this year’s series. The $10,000 Limit Omaha Eight or Better Championship attracted a top quality field, with such talents like Barry Greenstein, Abe Mosseri, Mike Matusow, Steve Zolotow and “Miami” John Cernuto, as well as Farha himself, lining up to take part and the standard of poker was high.
212 players bought into the event, creating a first prize payout of $488,237 and Farha was always in the hunt for it, finishing the first day’s poker in fourth place, with chip leader Eugene Katchalov only 25,000 ahead. He also managed to stay near to the top of the chip count throughout day two, finishing up in third place.
For that reason it was no surprise to see the man born in Beirut go deep in the tournament and he soon found himself heads up against another man in top form, James “Flushy” Dempsey, the British winner of WSOP 2010 event number nine, the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em. Dempsey was in the hunt for his second WSOP bracelet but after a three and a half hour marathon session, he proved no match for Sammy, who would pick his third bracelet.
Of the win, Farha said, “I love the game. This is my hobby, my business. You have to love the game to do well”. He must really love the game, as his career tournament earnings fall just short of $3 million and the Lebanese refugee, who turned professional in 1990, has now cashed seven times at the World Series of Poker, despite being primarily a high stakes Omaha cash game player. His other two WSOP bracelets are also in Omaha – the $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha tournament in 1996 and the $5,000 Limit Omaha Eight or Better event, ten years later.
Despite his achievements, Farha is perhaps best known for his runner-up finish in the 2003 WSOP Main Event, the year that Chris Moneymaker helped to spur on the internet poker boom. Farha lost out heads up after shoving his pair of jacks on the flop, only to find Moneymaker with two pair. The rest, as they say, is history.
Away from the tables, Farha is currently writing a book and a TV series, as well as acting as a spokesperson for Harrah’s.
