Scott Montgomery Wins First WSOP Bracelet

Scott Montgomery, the 28 year old Canadian poker professional who found fame in the 2008 World Series of Poker Main Event, this week landed his first WSOP bracelet.

Two years ago, Montgomery managed a fifth place finish in the WSOP Main Event won by Peter Eastgate, earning himself $3,088,012 in the process. Montgomery had found himself all in with A-3 against pocket sixes, flopping an Ace and turning a second, before Eastgate rivered the case six to bust him. That was Montgomery’s fourth cash at the WSOP, but it was his first final table and was the result that brought his talents to the public’s attention.

2010 is turning into a decent series for the man from Perth, Ontario, as this first WSOP title is his third cash in a tournament at the 41st annual Las Vegas poker-fest. Placing 31st in a $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha event and 28th in a $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em tournament, Montgomery managed to finish the job in event number 36, the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em.

Attracting a strong field of 3,102 players, the event paid out $481,760 for first place. Montgomery, who was fifth of 6,839 in 2008’s WSOP Main Event, said of the field size, “I’ve always enjoyed playing the big-field events”, adding, “Playing six or seven days in a row doesn’t tire me out at all… If you’re not willing to play seven days in a row of 12-hour poker events, there’s no reason to go into the field”.

The Full Tilt sponsored professional’s win is the fourth WSOP bracelet for Canada at this year’s series, which puts them level with Britain in terms of WSOP bracelets won by countries other than the United States.

Montgomery was humble in his WSOP bracelet acceptance speech, telling the audience, “Some people say winning the event is like proving yourself…I don’t think about it that way myself…I know what my skills are as a player. I know what level I’m at. I’m not the best in the world but I’m good enough to get by. I play what I’m best at and I do well at it”.

Scott Montgomery has now won over $3.6 million in just two years of playing at the World Series of Poker, from nine in the money finishes. Expect much more at the WSOP from the talented Canadian.

Picking the Right Poker Game
Of all the tricks and tips to improve a novice player’s chances of winning at poker, one of the easiest to implement, yet so often overlooked, is that of choosing the right game.

Playing Against a Pre-Flop Raise
You’re playing No Limit Texas Hold’em and you’re dealt a premium hand. A player in front of you opens with a raise. It’s a great feeling, but it’s just as important to play this situation correctly as it is to fold a poor hand or to call when the pot odds are right, if you are to build a bankroll and be a winning poker player in the long term. So what needs to be considered to ensure the hand is played optimally?

Poker Patter 3
The third instalment of “Poker Patter”, a look at the weird and wonderfully varied vocabulary that can be heard at the poker table, takes a look at terms for types of play or moves made at the felt. If you ever considered what a “crying call” might be or looked puzzled after accusations of “slowrolling”, then wonder no more.

How To Play The Hand - Fixed Limit and Jh-Th In Big Blind
The game is $2 / $4 Fixed Limit Hold’em at your local casino, where the standard of play is generally loose, with plenty of players taking a flop, though not particularly aggressive. The table is full and you have about $200 in front of you. You are dealt Jh-Th in the big blind.

Playing the starting hand in Texas Hold'em
Knowing how to play your starting hand is the first step in playing a good game of Texas Hold’em. Find out what you should know.

Playing Ace-King
Ace King can be one of the trickiest hands to play in No Limit Hold’em, particularly in tournaments. Many inexperienced, novice players win lots of small pots holding “Big Slick”, but when they lose with Ace King, they tend to lose a massive pot, costing them their tournament life.
