After a fairly subdued week, followers of online high stakes poker breathed a collective sigh of relief on Monday, mostly thanks to Cole South, Tom “durrrr” Dwan and the unknown Swedish player “Isildur1”. Dwan booked winning sessions against Ilari Sahamies, Cole South and Isildur1, while the mystery Swede also took on South, as well as his regular sparring partner Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo.
After taking a $1.8 million battering last week, it was no surprise that Isildur1 had taken a few days out from the “nosebleed” high stakes poker games, but he returned to action this week, after reportedly being seen at lower stakes, by taking on CardRunners pro South at the $50 / $100 Pot Limit Omaha tables, before the pair raised the stakes to $100 / $200. Both sessions went to the Swede, who earned just under $170,000 from the encounter.
After finishing with South, Isildur1’s next victim would be Bonomo. The match took place at a mixture of $100 / $200 and $200 / $400 No Limit Hold’em tables and ended with Isildur1 scooping a little over $143,000.
The Swede’s first losing session came against Tom Dwan, when they played 374 hands of XX, resulting in an $84,000 profit for “durrrr”. Things soon got worse for the enigmatic internet poker phenomenon, as Cole South came looking for revenge. The pair played Pot Limit Omaha across three different limits – $100 / $200, $200 / $400 and $300 / $600 – and South more than made up for his earlier efforts, taking down over $325,000 and leaving Isildur1 more than $110,000 in the red on the day.
Isildur1 has really captured the imagination of poker fans across the globe, something recognised by PartyPoker and Matchroom Sport, who have invited the Swede to the PartyPoker Big Game IV, the high stakes cash game at Les Ambassadeurs in London. Although Isildur1’s attendance at the game is highly unlikely, producers have offered to help conceal his identity, with Matchroom Managing Director Eddie Hearn bizarrely stating that they are “quite happy to let him play wearing a mask or in disguise”, should he decide to attend the event.
Tony G has gone a step further, by cheekily offering to stake Isildur1 for the game on his blog, as well as offering to cover the cost of accommodation and flights to the UK. The outspoken professional also joked that he would “talk to the owners of Les Ambassadeurs and get the venue renamed Les Isildur1’s for the night”, in order to persuade the Swede to get involved.
Some of the confirmed names for the PartyPoker Big Game IV include Neil Channing, Luke Schwartz and Phil Laak.
