The value of showing your hole cards is a topic that divides the poker community. Many of the best and most experienced poker playing professionals choose never to reveal any information about their play for free, while an equal number are seemingly happy to show every last bluff to their opponents. But who is right?
As with a lot of poker strategy, it just depends. Everyone has their own strategy and there are no rights and wrongs when it comes to winning at poker. There are always going to be situations at the table, be it online or live, where either course of action can be justified.
The important thing to remember is that whenever you do anything at the poker table, you must think about why you are doing it. When you make a raise, for example, you need to consider what you hope to achieve by it, what size would be appropriate and whether there are better options. The same goes for showing your hole cards – if you feel there is an advantage to be gained, you should exploit that edge, but don’t just show cards for the sake of it.
Here are a couple of situations where it might be a good idea to show your cards, even if you usually prefer not to:
Imagine you’ve raised pre-flop the last couple of times with genuine hands and you’re dealt a monster. You obviously raise again, but you can sense the rest of the poker table thinking that you’re at it. I mean, who gets dealt three big hands in a row? If you manage to win the pot uncontested, it could be a good strategy to show your hole cards just to reinforce a tight image and prove that you had a hand.
Similarly, it could work in your favour to show a few strong hands in a poker tournament, when approaching the bubble. As the money appears on the horizon, inexperienced poker players will tighten up and become nervous when faced with decisions. A tight table image will increase your chances of stealing those antes by helping to make their decisions for them.
Perhaps there’s a player at your table who has taken a couple of bad beats and is looking angry or upset. If you can tip that player over the edge and induce tilt, then you and your poker bankroll could really benefit. What better way to achieve than by showing a complete bluff?
Whatever your opinion on showing hole cards, remember that poker is about finding every available edge and exploiting it – never turn your back on the opportunity to develop your bankroll!
