The PokerStars EPT Vilamoura has finally drawn to a conclusion after a relentless invasion by the British. The final table saw no fewer than 70% of the chips in the possession of the three British players and it was almost inevitable that one of the UK contingent would take down the title.
In the end, the first place prize money of €467,835 went to young Toby Lewis, whose previous European Poker Tour best was 28th in Prague last year. Lewis had slowly accumulated chips throughout the tournament, avoiding big pots and always looking comfortable on the final table.
At the heads up stage, Lewis faced Martin Jacobsen, fresh from a World Series of Poker final table and a player with EPT final table experience under his belt – the Swede finished 3rd in 2008’s EPT Budapest. Lewis had a chip deficit of around 2:1 to overcome, which he turned around in approximately 20 minutes, never looking back.
The final hand saw Lewis hit trip fives on the turn, a card which gave Jacobsen nines and fives, which sparked celebrations from the Brits on the rail, including JP Kelly and James “Flushy” Dempsey.
The other British players at the final table were ex-professional footballer Teddy Sheringham, who busted in fifth place and Sam Trickett, who was subject to some horrible luck throught the EPT Vilamoura final table, particularly during the hand in which he was eliminated by Jacobsen in fourth place.
Jacobsen four-bet his QJ all in against Trickett’s pocket jacks, managing to complete a flush on the turn and take down a 2.4 million pot, eliminating the Brit. In fact, at the final table, Trickett was all in pre-flop seven times, behind only once (with pocket jacks against the pocket queens of a short stacked player) but winning only once. Showing a typically British ‘stiff upper lip’ throughout, even tournament director Thomas Kremser praised Trickett for his final table conduct.
The tournament, which is the second leg of this year’s PokerStars European Poker Tour after the event was moved from its November slot in the calendar, broke the record for the largest live poker tournament ever held in Portugal, with a total of 384 participants stumping up the €5,000 + €300 buy-in. This made for a total prizepool of €1,862,400.
After the Brits made Portugal their second home for EPT Vilamoura, it is rather appropriate that the next stop on the PokerStars European Poker Tour is London, where they will really feel at home. This is the EPT’s first ever visit to London and with the British poker players in top form, it should be an excellent tournament.
