The World Poker Tour’s Bellagio Cup has played down to a final table of six, despite rumours of a format change and a nine-handed final table, with John Caridad holding a commanding chip lead over the rest.
This is the fifth renewal of the Bellagio Cup, a $10,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em tournament, though in previous incarnations the buy-in had been $15,000. This reduction led to a healthier turnout than last year’s 268, with 353 participants this time out, creating a prize pool of $3,424,100.
Last year’s Bellagio Cup was won by Brazilian professional poker player Alexandre Gomes, who earned $1,187,670 for his efforts. This year’s winner will take home $875,150, which is not at all bad considering the heavily reduced buy-in.
In the driving seat to land the spoils is Australian John Caridad, who sits on $5,000,000 in chips, well clear of Moritz Kranich in second place, who owns a stack $2,750,000 deep. The biggest name at the latest WPT final table though, is undoubtedly that of Phil Ivey. Despite registering late, Ivey has set about building a handy stack and finds himself with $1,595,000 to play with.
Other big names who registered late included Daniel Negreanu, Tom Dwan and Phil Hellmuth, but none of those big guns could survive beyond the third day’s poker. Eric Panayiotou led the field going into Day 4, the only player to break the $1,000,000 mark in tournament chips, but the Cypriot’s quest for a first World Poker Tour title ended early, as he busted out in eight place, just short of the final table.
Cashing in a WPT even for the first time was Annette Obrestad, who busted in 35th after missing both a flush and an open-ended straight draw. The young Full Tilt professional cashed four times at this year’s WSOP.
There was a decent showing from Jeff Lisandro, who looked to being going well until he found himself all in with A-Q against Rick Saloman’s 3-3. Saloman flopped a set to bust the Australian in 15th place. It was Lisandro who busted fellow countryman and 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event winner, Joe Hachem. The latter moved all in with K-Q and Lisandro made the call with A-7, both players holding two diamonds. Although the flop brought a Q to help Hachem, the river card dealt a killer blow, delivering an A to give Lisandro top pair.
The World Poker Tour Bellagio Cup VI final table will play to a finish on Friday.
