Day five of the WPT LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino has drawn to a close and the final table is in place for Thurday’s exciting climax.
The 2001 World Series of Poker Main Event winner Carlos Mortensen emerged as chip leader at the end of the fourth day, after a late surge. An all in with aces against jacks saw increased his stack size to a little under a million, before “The Matador” picked up another big hand in the form of two red jacks. Despite a jack on the flop, Michael Woo’s all in move was still a tricky one for Mortensen, due to the presence of three clubs, but he made the call and Woo’s pocket queens were no good. Mortensen went into day five with 1,669,000 in chips.
Day three chip leader Mark Newhouse was still at the right end of the chip counts at the end of the fourth day, finishing in second place on 1,308,000. He doubled up with just 27 players remaining, when he turned two pair against Dan Martin’s pocket kings.
There were still plenty of notable poker names amongst the 22 players surviving day four. Aside from Mortensen and Newhouse, Masa Kagawa remained near the top of the chip counts and Annie Duke, Johnny Chan and Steve Sung were all still alive and kicking.
Day five would reduce the 22 players to a final televised table of six. Duke was one of the earliest players to bust, out in 19th for $45,773 and Masa Kagawa was soon to follow, after getting all in with AQ against AT. The board contained four hearts and Kagawa’s opponent held the ace of hearts – ouch.
Newhouse managed to lose a large chunk of his big stack in a short space of time and soon bust out in 13th place. Ten-time World Series bracelet winner Johnny Chan was next to go, holding AK against pocket sixes. He took home $67,944 for his efforts.
Mortensen busted in 9th place, the blinds on the final table eventually eating away at his stack, forcing a shove with A4, into Jim Casement’s pocket tens. Steve Sung followed not long after, unable to add to his three World Poker Tour final table appearances, leaving seven relative unknowns to compete for the last spot on the TV table. Casement was the unlucky player to miss out, shoving A4 into A9, with no help from the board.
So the TV table at the LA Poker Classic will line up as follows:
Andras Koroknai – 4,995,000
Raymond Dolan – 3,300,000
Tri Huynh – 2,565,000
Gevork Kasabyan – 2,000,000
Jean-Claude Moussa – 1,360,000
Michael Kamran – 680,000
The action gets underway Thursday afternoon.
