The anticipation is over and the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event is well underway. The showpiece No Limit Hold’em tournament is the second biggest in WSOP history, with officials confirming that the 6,844 participants of 2008 will be beaten, but not the 2006 Main Event field.
Day 1A drew 1,125 players to the Rio, with big names like Chris Moneymaker, Michael Mizrachi and Barry Shulman all ending the day close to the chip lead. Greg Raymer, the WSOP Main Event winner in 2004, will not return for the second day’s poker after busting early. Others to fall by the wayside included Mike Caro, Isaac Haxton and Victor Ramdin.
Day 1B saw a further 1,489 WSOP Main Event buy-ins, including the likes of Erick Lindgren, Justin Bonomo, Annette Obrestad and Jamie Gold. All four busted before the day was out and Obrestad in particular will want to forget her first experience at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, particularly after the hype surrounding her in the build up to this year’s series. Dan Harrington, Phil Laak and Gavin Smith were big name survivors from Day 1B.
The third Day 1 flight was the largest of the three played so far, with 2,314 turning up, swelling the field to 4,928. The 1989 Main Event champion and 11 time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth took his seat in his usual dramatic style, this time dressed as an MMA fighter, complete with robe and gloves. In the past, he has shown up wearing a Julius Caesar costume, a NASCAR drivers outfit and dressed as a World War II general.
Hellmuth’s antics were the subject of a Doyle Brunson tweet: “I’m glad I’m not playing today so I won’t see Hellmuth make a fool out of himself with his entrance”, said the grand old man of poker. 99 of the 103 responses support Doyle, but that didn’t stop Hellmuth hogging the limelight.
Sadly for Phil, he didn’t survive the day and nor did Huck Seed, Jerry Yang, Howard Lederer or Tom “durrrr” Dwan. David Williams, Johnny Chan and Hoyt Corkins all enjoyed better days, finding themselves near the top end of the chip stacks.
