The 41st annual World Series of Poker is now over halfway to completion, but the action shows no sign of letting up.
Phil Ivey couldn’t get enough and found himself multi-tabling, playing three WSOP events at the same time – the $10,000 Heads-up Championship, $2,500 Pot Limit Hold’em/Omaha and the $5,000 Six Handed No Limit Hold’em.
A fortnight ago, Men “The Master” Nguyen landed his seventh World Series of Poker bracelet and as event number 32 drew to a close, it seemed he might be adding an eighth to his collection.
Nguyen found himself involved in a lengthy heads up battle with online player Jeffrey “jpapola” Papola, at the close of the $5,000 Six Handed No Limit Hold’em tournament. The event had attracted a number of quality players including Erick Lindgren, who was highly fancied for the event, but was first to bust from the final table. Papola eventually held off the challenge of “The Master”, though it took around five hours to do so.
Ngyuen’s second place was worth $412,746 and keeps him in the hunt for the WSOP Player of the Year award, while Papola scored a $667,433 payout, in addition to his first WSOP bracelet. Also in the running for 2010 Player of the Year are Michael Mizrachi and James “Flushy” Dempsey – both players have already won a bracelet at this year’s WSOP, as well as cashing two further times.
Dempsey has led a real assault on WSOP 2010 by British poker players. In addition to his victory in the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold’em event, there have been bracelets for Praz Bansi ($1,500 No Limit Hold’em), Richard Ashby ($1,500 Seven Card Stud) and Mike Ellis ($1,500 No Limit Hold’em). This total of four WSOP bracelets has already beaten the British 2009 haul, which stood at three.
In other WSOP news, 78 year old Harold Angle won the $1,000 Seniors No Limit Hold’em Championship bracelet, after beating a record 3,142 strong field which featured the likes of Tom Schneider and TJ Cloutier. The event was Angle’s first major tournament entry in sixty years of playing poker and what a tournament to win.
Jose Luis Velador landed his second WSOP bracelet when he beat David Chiu, who owns four WSOP bracelets himself, at the heads up stage of the $2,500 Pot Limit Hold’em/Omaha tournament.
