This year’s World Series of Poker Europe schedule has now been finalised and the calendar sees the inclusion of two new bracelet carrying poker tournaments.
London’s Empire Casino will host the 2010 WSOPE, which beings on September 14th, running through to September 28th and series owners Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. have taken the decision to kick the poker festival off with one of the two new events, a £2,500 six-handed No Limit Hold’em tournament.
The second new inclusion to the World Series of Poker Europe schedule, is a £10,000 buy-in Heads Up “High Roller” tournament, which will take place halfway through the series on September 21st. The competition will be completed on the day and the buy-in will be higher than the Las Vegas version of the event.
The World Series of Poker Europe was launched back in 2007 with just three bracelet events, in Pot Limit Omaha, No Limit Hold’em and HORSE. In 2008, a second No Limit Hold’em event was added, which carried a smaller buy-in and last year, the HORSE tournament was replaced with a Pot Limit Hold’em/Omaha competition.
Although two new events have been pencilled in for the 2010 WSOPE, the decision to drop the Pot Limit Hold’em/Omaha event due to a poor turnout of just 158 players, means that there will only be five bracelet carrying events at this year’s series.
Last year’s WSOP produced record attendance, but the decision was taken to hold exactly the same number of events at the 2010 poker showpiece event, which is currently underway in Las Vegas. Ty Stewart, the WSOP Vice-President, described the decision to increase the number of WSOPE tournaments as “consistent with the growing stature of this event”.
The final table of the 2009 WSOPE Main Event was a stellar affair, with many big names from the poker world taking to the felt. Barry Shulman eventually won out, taking the bracelet and £801,603, beating the likes of recent WSOP winner Praz Bansi, as well as Jason Mercier, Daniel Negreanu and Antoine Saout.
The first ever WSOPE Main Event winner was Annette Obrestad, who is only just eligible for the Vegas equivalent and is making her WSOP debut at this year’s series. She became youngest player ever to win a WSOP bracelet and in so doing, broke the record for the biggest ever payout to a female poker player.
